I signed up a few weeks ago, and told my brother I was coming to visit him to do this ride. He ended up signing up and buying a bike to ride as well.
I'll be riding the bike I hand built over lockdown.
I'm a little nervous about the hills as it's considerably flatter here in Dallas. Seriously thinking about getting a triple crank.

Unless you have legs like tree trunks you will definitely be walking the steep pitches with that gearing, though you will be in good company. I've managed to do the ride without walking using a triple with 30 front 28 rear gearing but be aware that even with a triple there are some spots where it can be difficult to keep pedaling due to ruts and loose gravel.

Wow, that bike has CLEARANCE! What width tires are you running on there? It looks beautiful...hope you don't mind getting it muddied up.

For my shoes I made sure to pick up the Vittoria 1976 spd model since it has the rubber soles for more traction on the hikes.

Sadly, I've got to downgrade my status for Eroica to doubtful. I fell off a stepladder this last weekend and dislocated my shoulder. The stepladder was on a drop cloth at the top of some carpeted stairs, and I didn't realize how close to the edge the ladder was until it slipped off the edge and I went down in a heap. That was before I tumbled down the stairs and then passed out a couple times. I finally got the shoulder popped back in socket after 6+ hours in the ER, but my shoulder is pretty messed up. There's potentially other muscle/ligament damage, but I have to wait until the 25th before I can get in to see an orthopedic dr. for an MRI. I haven't tried sitting on a bike yet. Out of the saddle riding is out of the question for now. Even if I somehow make a speedy recovery, my mileage base is way down from where it should be.

Sorry to hear that Gaucho. While we never forget how to ride a bicycle, it seems that we do forget how to climb a ladder. They have been frightening me lately.

It is unfortunate when , in a split second, life reminds us who is in charge. I hope you heal quickly. Shoulders are nasty.

And if the training base is down, ride the 40 miler with kabuki12 and me. We are not exactly speed merchants, but we have a good time and I am about the biggest wheel to draft off of you are likely to find. Oh, and Joe, at least, is pretty good company. That's fun guy Joe on the left and giant economy size me on the right. You could be the Curly to our Moe and Larry.

Thanks for the well wishes, guys. I did try sitting on a bike and it was tolerable for that brief moment. We’ll see how the next few weeks go and what the doc says.

Am right with you there, Gaucho. Had a paddle boarding incident several weeks ago, right shoulder got all squinched around in the wrong direction.
Ortho doc says nothing broken but all sorts of mayhem going on internally.
Still gonna go to Cino in a few weeks, even tho I can’t possibly ride. And Eroica too, in September. Hope to ride there, but the MRI will give us more info on Monday.
Did 72 somewhat painful miles on the indoor trainer this week, so…hope abides!

Oh man, we are dropping like flies! I am so sorry to hear about both of you, Randy and Doc. Randy, I must have added insult to injury by sending you a ride invitation for this Sunday. Heal up soon, both of you.
Sadly, I must report another mishap that happened to one of our brethren. Young Brett (aka numbernine of the pale yellow Paramount) was on an epic transcontinental west to east bike ride over about the past month. Last week he was hit by a car in the middle of Kansas. He wasn't badly injured but it's game over for the epic adventure.

@davester Oh, no! That’s terrible news about Alex. Glad he’s okay but too bad he had to abandon his long-planned tour. At least he wasn’t riding the Paramount! Thanks for the the kind words. Hopefully I’ll be back in the saddle before long.

Okay, it's official. Until further notice, nobody goes outside (or gets on a ladder - I'm looking at you, gaucho777) without being encased in bubble wrap. If you don't look like the Michelin Man, you don't outside. Got it?

Brett says he’s doing OK, disappointed though. I’ve been hit a couple-three times over the years, fortunately none ending my days on bikes. Best to enjoy the time we do get out there.

I've been dealing with left knee swelling and stiffness for the past 3 weeks after a big hill climb. Needing to ice the knee regularly, stiff and sore while standing or walking yet no pain while riding, has improved over the last week despite riding 4 times over 125 miles total. Hopefully it will remain stable enough to ride Eroica.

I was advised the Eroica California website has been reviewed and updated (mostly) by US biking member/representative/judge Bob Freitas, and now Concours registration for all classes and display bikes is open, see link - you must have an Eroica account and sign in to access. Note the concours appears to be outdoors at a paved venue so everyone will need to bring a functional bike stand (not sure why they would later still suggest a “stake” since that would damage a paved parking lot area).
https://eroica.cc/en/california/concours-d-elegance-eroica-california
The annual Concours d'Elegance at Eroica California will take place on Saturday, September 18th, 2021.
The annual Concours d'Elegance at Eroica California will take place on Saturday, September 18th, 2021. This event showcases the best vintage Road Racing, Track Racing and Randonneur bicycles (i.e. Alex Singer, Rene Herse, Toei, must be shown without the panniers) owned by Eroica participants and collectors.
Spectators are welcome. Riders must provide their own ground-level bike stand. The Concours venue is on asphalt, please bring a stand or stake as appropriate. If it rains, the venue will be moved to the Cambria Vets Hall. In that case please be prepared with a stand that will work indoors. *No Persons #2 stands.
Concours classifications:
• Class 1: Original Vintage Bicycles up to 1955*
• Class 2: Original Vintage Bicycles from 1956 to 1987*
• Class 3: Restored Vintage Bicycles up to 1987**
• Class 4: Display only***
Bike Submission
Interested parties must fill in the information listed on the concours registration page on our website and include at least 2 clear side view photos of each bicycle with a brief description. If for some reason your entry is denied you will receive an email from us. Please note: Photos submitted by entrants will become property of Eroica California.
Read Regulation
Please Notea) For information about bicycles please read our Regulation 6.
b) The event organizer will provide the simple bike stand for the entries and our staff will indicate your position on the field.
c) If you prefer to use your own stand (ground level stand only) you may do so.
d) The show area is an outdoor grass field in the park maintained by the city.
e) If we have a weather issue on the day of the show we will hold the show inside the large registration tent.
f) If you have any questions or comments please contact us via email; freitas1@pacbell.net

There does seem to be some slight conflicting statements here (asphalt vs later saying grass, simple stand provided vs bring your own, etc. so again an inquiry will be sent to Bob.
Oddly (or an oversight) the Festival info still shows 2020 but many of the items have obviously been revised. I still have questions regarding how the pre-race dinner will work given the current COVID situation so I put an inquiry in. For now, I’d consider the below schedule as dynamic, they mention modifications may still happen, to me understandable given the need to be rapidly adaptable.>>

Eroica California is pleased to announce our event program for 2020, and it will not disappoint.
There will be an activity for all ages, and we cannot wait to host you and your family here on the central coast in September. We will continue to add to our program between now and September, so stay tuned for more exciting news as we approach the most anticipated cycling weekend of the year.

<< I note the revised start times, especially the later Santa Lucia route. In 2019 Eroica did not force us to start on time and for slowpokes like me, I needed all the time I could get so I started with the Heroic riders. There may be logistical reasons (sufficient food and water for everyone at rest stops for example) so trying to spread everyone out especially on the three rides with common stops at at least three points would be a valid concern. Again, I’ll check on this too.
The Friday Sunset Ride, Linn’s Farm dinner, and ride back into town is new to me, don’t know if it’s open to all or not but certainly sounds like fun if available. But if crowded, then be prepared IMO for appropriate risk management. >>

The Friday Sunset Ride, Linn’s Farm dinner, and ride back into town is new to me, don’t know if it’s open to all or not but certainly sounds like fun if available. But if crowded, then be prepared IMO for appropriate risk management. >>

Get well!

I hope you come down regardless, even if you can't ride. Seeing all the cool bikes, seeing all us really cool people (here I blush modestly), maybe even volunteering if the shoulder is up for it, should be a morale boost. In the meantime, lots of healing energy going out to you and lots of hopes you can do the ride.

I have been dealing with hip pain all summer and will not be able to ride this event, I do have an entry up for sale for anyone interested, but I don't see on their website how to transfer an entry?
