Hmmm. Those look exactly like the fenders on my 26"-wheeled Milano. That would explain the prob with the rear.

I have a 1987 Bianchi Axis, and I'm very happy with it. I hear the new model is lighter.

I was running my karate monkey as a 1x10 for a while. It liked to throw the chain, though, and i figured while I was putting a front derailleur on to act as a chainguide, I might as well just use it as a derailleur, so I added a chainring as well. Looks like the Castro Valley has chainguards on either side of the chainring, though, so I wouldn't be too worried about throwing the chain.

In the Summer, I sometimes commute on my Bianchi Trofeo but she's to pretty to ride in our Northwest Winters. Bianchi makes great bikes!

I commute on a late-80s Grizzly. I've ridden a couple friends' Bianchis (not recent models) and they were terrific-feeling bikes.

I Run an '05 axis for my commute. Also use it for 'cross but I have had no complaints burning down the streets here on a 'cross bike. Philly has the infamous pot holes and trolly tracks from hades. Anyhow, would recommend if you are riding streets in disrepair.

The Casto Valley is a great bike. My only two complaints are that the headlight does not have a stand light, and that there is no cable stop on the down tube for running a front derailer. The fenders come set like that straight out of the box. They're not nearly as easy to set up as SKS or Planet Bike fenders. I really like the reflective strip on the sidewalls. It gets attention after dark.

i ride a Bianchi Spillo, it's similar to this. https://www.bianchiusa.com/06_bergamo.html
For me at least, it's a very practical and useful bike, not to mention good value for money.
