It was the Bremerton Sun, an afternoon paper.
now renamed the kitsap sun.
I started out with a traditional Schwinn and a poncho-like bag that held papers on both the front and the back.
you got to learn which days were going to be light and heavy. We paperboys all hated thanksgiving week with all the inserts.
I saved my money for a decent BMX bike I would race on the weekends, a PK Ripper made by Race Incorporated. (Family discount from Uncle’s Aberdeen Wa bike shop)
best part of the job; the young lady who would greet me at the door in lingerie and have a quick word or two.
worst part; collecting $$ once a month. I felt like that kid in the movie “Better Off Dead”

His client base was Brentwood and Bel Air.

Yeah, for a while, mustabeen maybe 1958 or '9? Chicago Tribune.
That would have meant a (3-speed) Schwinn, I didn't 'move up' to a (2x5) Raleigh until maybe 1961.
Sold newspapers too before that, standing on corners early in the AM to folks heading off to work.

In the early '70s I delivered the Tucson Daily Citizen for several years. Had one route with about 60 customers, and took on another with 50 more. All done on a Raleigh Sports 3-speed, with a big wire rack basket up front and two wire baskets on either side of the rear wheel. The bike held up remarkably well, considering. Collecting was a drag, especially on a month with five Saturdays instead of four, so the price would be higher, and the explanation that "It's a five week month" didn't sit well with anyone.
But I bought two racing bikes as good as any in the world with my paper-route money. Try that today!

Santa Barbara News Press. Had a Diamondback BMX rattle-canned black that I got from my friend Byram.
I was constantly in hot water by my delivery guy named Ken, he once said that I was the "Worst paperboy in the history of the News Press!" and that's a real quote!
I've got some stories, from the invisible house to "Old Man Sweeny" and his prize winning roses, and more!

From about 1967 to 1970 (age 13 to 16) I had a paper route with the Marin County Independent Journal. I started it on my 3-speed Huffy (tough because it was a hilly route) but saved up my earnings to buy my first 10-speed, a Raleigh Record with Simplex Prestige derailleurs. Woohoo! I kept that 10-speed through my freshman year in college. Here I am with my brother who rode a smaller route on his Schwinn Lemon Peeler:

My brother was the chief city editor back when it was still a local paper . I think he was the youngest one to hold that position and the News Press was very well respected. He had left before the “buy out” happened and it really upset him. He told me it was the end of the paper as we knew it.

Not sure what I started with on my paper route in the early 70s, but I quickly earned enough money to go down to the local Schwinn shop and buy a brand new 5-speed Collegiate in metallic brown if I recall. Skinny tires, a 5-speed freewheel, a shifter - wow, so cool! That bike started my obsession with bikes. It was sold in fairly short order and then it was a string of many, many '10-speeds' after that and leading up to today

Just read this;
Buffett’s journey to wealth began early in his life, with his keen interest in business and investing evident from a young age. He purchased his first stock at age 11 and filed his first tax return at 13, claiming a deduction for his bicycle, which he used for his paper route.
