5'10" and at my full "fighting weight" I'm a buck 35. The last wheelset I built for my commuting bike was with Mavic CXP 33s and DT Swiss Competition spokes (32/32, 3x/3x). This is a totally bombproof wheelset and serves my city riding style well (bunny hops, curbs, the occasional cyclocross detour, etc.) but it's not the lightest thing out there by any stretch of the imagination.

Tonight I was fooling around w/ the DT Swiss online spoke calculator and either I'm insane or it'd be possible to build up a wheelset as light (if not lighter) than Mavic's Ksyrium ES. I'm not looking for anything aero, just a traditional (clincher) rim w/ somewhat easy to aquire parts that I can build up and use on my road bike (10SP Shimano).

So here's what I'm debating:
- DT Swiss RR 1.1
- IRD Cadence
- Mavic Opens Pro
- Velocity Aerohead

- DT Swiss Revolution 2.0/1.5
- DT Swiss Revolution 1.8/1.5
- DT Swiss Competition 2.0/1.8

- DT 240 Road
- Shimano Dura-Ace 7800
- ?

For lacing and drilling, I could use the advice of some people who have put their wheels through significant miles or built a bajillion for others. I could obviously build these things up w/ Open Pros and Competions, 32/32 and 3x all around, but I'd like to get the weight down to 1600g or lower.

I used to have a pair of Mavic CXP22s, laced to Bianchi/Campagnolo hubs. Recently picked up a pair of Xero XR-1s - 1500g, light as **** and feeling absolutely great so far.

I am at a similar weight as you. On my previous XC rig (26" wheels), I built a set of wheels using DT Revolution spokes, except drive side rear was wheelsmith butted. With DT 240's for hubs. The hubs are just fantastic, they are so well made. Also, they are very easy to service. I could have gotten that set of wheels down to 1400 grams if I had used aluminum nipples.

Ya, the DT hubs do look good. I've heard of some reliability issues w/ the Hugi hubs, but that's pretty much expected given the load they'd experience.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Go to the Clydesdale forum. I'll bet some of those guys have lightweight wheelsets for sale.

Pretty much so. Kind of defeats the purpose of building it up myself as well. Oh well, I'll post the final build once I have it figured out.

My gf has 32h open pros with 240's on the back and 32h OP/Centaur on the front. It's a pretty sweet setup.

Mike Garcia Niobium 30's...1oz less than the ES and half the price. If you go to the main page he has new Speedcific hubs that knock another 3oz off the listed weights.
