Hawaii passed a 3' law

So the legislature wrapped up last week and a 3' bill made it through. Supposed to take effect 1 July if the gov signs it. I'm not sure it really makes any difference in behavior though I'm sure someone will complain about it.

Now they have to launch some kind of awareness campaign, otherwise kind of useless.

Is that 3' from the car body or from the truck mirror?

Not only that, it's going to be your word against the driver's if they pass closer than 3'. Even with a camera it's hard to judge passing distance on the video.

All I can say is that so far I've been pretty lucky with vehicles and passing distance.

On Oahu, cyclist would be better off without bike cops. In the past, they have spent more time confiscating bicycles because they were not registered.

The Honolulu Police Bike Patrol has set up "bike road blocks" for the express purpose of confiscating unregistered bikes.

In 2006, a military spouse, who cycled to work, got hit by a car. Her bicycle was damaged and she wanted a police report. She had problems getting Honolulu Police to respond to what they considered an insignificant accident. Since she was fairly new to the island and brought her bike from out of state, she was unaware of the bike registration (note - no other county in Hawaii registers bikes). The police finally show up and rather than simply telling the woman she needed to register her bike, the police confiscated it. No ticket was given to the motorist which caused the collision. GOOD JOB HONOLULU POLICE, WAY TO MISTREAT OUR MILITARY FAMILIES AND CYCLIST.

The times I have called the police for a collision or for being run off the road, the first thing they were interested in, was if the bike was registered (even though they had my ID card in hand).

many years ago... two buddies and I were on a ride through an Indian reservation and the last in our line -- two lane road with the usual shoulder -- was nicked on his shoulder by a 'protuberance.' We saw the driver smiling at us in the side view mirror as his truck passed by. Counting coup I guess...

They should just pass a law you need to be fully over in the next lane to pass a bike. You can't possibly stay in the same land and give 3 feet even if the bike is right on the line.

Actually, there could be a simple way to keep them away from you. On a bike tour thru E. Europe years ago, I came upon another tourer from Europe. He told me of a trick he came up with to ensure drivers don't get too close: he took a long stick or smthg, wrapped the ends in foil (they were already pointy) and then tied it to the top of his stuff in back widthwise. This way, the drivers, not wanting to damage their precious gods, gave him plenty of space thinking those metal tips would scratch their paint job. I've never tried it, but bet it would work.

I am not holding my breath, that it will make any difference. While others pointed out the need for an awareness campaign. There are still going to be those motorists' 'sick' with 'getthereitis' and 'ineedtobethereyesterdayitis'.
