Nice day for a ride here in north central New Jersey. Chose one of my hillier routes, about 35 miles, with no need to hurry since wife and daughters out for the day. When I returned my legs definitely needed a nap.

Planned to take my Stoker on a 33 mile HOOTS (Hoosiers out on Tandems) ride and did.

Planned to go to a 50th wedding anniversary celebration in our neighborhood and did.

Didn't plan but did have a brief nap after driving home from the HOOTS ride.

My weekend, in fact the entire last week and likely the first half of next week, is summed up by the late Stephen Jay Gould:
We live now in the "Age of Bacteria." Our planet has always been in the "Age of Bacteria," ever since the first fossils—bacteria, of course—were entombed in rocks more than 3 billion years ago.
Okay, in truth I am suffering from a virus (flu-like), but close enough. One friend was down for nearly four months with this bug and my mail carrier is still recovering, and she was first stricken in November (respiratory infections and smoking don't play well together). Even my son, Godzilla, has taken to riding a bike to campus instead of walking since he caught this thing. (He stopped riding a couple years back when he got tired of breaking cranks, pedals, bottom bracket axles (how can anyone break one of those?) and other assorted parts.

So, my big day's event was riding the two miles to the farmers' market to get vegetables and walking the mile to the grocery store for some fruit. My wife joked that we are practicing for when we turn one hundred years old. If I'm going to live that long I need to take better care of this body.

Got up early, put in 87 hard training miles for a 250 miler the last two days of June. Avg was 19.8, riding with the youngsters ;-) High humidity as usual, temps around 90 at the end of the ride. Winds were only 10-15 so very calm for us.

Ran some errands, went to church, got a haircut, ran some more errands and resting up for another 60 training miles on Sunday morning.

Life is good!

I was in my garden at 8:00 a.m. laying mulch and trimming shrubs while my husband "re-graveled" our garden path. I didn't finish up until about 5:00 p.m. looking like I'd just escaped my own live burial--but the garden looks great and ready for a massive party we are hosting later this month.
Now, I am sitting in our newly renovated screen house, showered, sipping a glass of merlot, listening to some James Blake, and posting here. Hopefully, tomorrow I'll get a ride in. Life is good.

Rain in the morning, daughter's lacrosse game in the afternoon and a graduation party in the evening. Day is shot. Nothing planned for tomorrow except a bunch of saddle time.

Work day for me -- office hours and private tutoring session at the university from 0730 to 1000, then a consulting gig from 1100 to 1500.

Since I tend to work a lot of Saturdays, I have taken up early morning weekday riding, which has worked out better than expected, given rush hour traffic patterns.

32 miles with two friends at 7 am today, shower, work around/in the house, trip to town, got sucked into trying to fix some email contacts/calendar issues on my KDE laptop, watched Star Trek then Svengoolie with the wife and daughter... typical Saturday.

The forecast for Saturday was for 104˚F up here in the high desert, so I knew I wanted to ride "down below". When I pulled out of the driveway, the thermometer was reading 106. Ended up putting in a 50 miler along the coast between Ventura and Carpinteria. It was almost too cold at the ocean. Glad I had the jacket along. I was hurting, so took it easy and explored a bit of Carpinteria and went around some old haunts around the Ventura harbor. Lady friend said to save Sunday for her, so have no idea what I'll be doing. No riding, (she has a hip replacement surgury in about a week).

Saturday, I put in 25 before 7:30 am because the surf was screaming loud out of the NW and that means wind is a coming. By 11 it was blowing 20 knots and rising and pushed the surf to 25' at North Head. Beautiful blue skies.

Still recovering but coming along OK, I guess.
Set out yesterday to do my first 20 miles ride in a good while.
Ended up with 21.3. Felt great! Gotta love the small victories in life.

Lol ... welcome to the beach. Flippin clammy on the beach itself and blistering hot only a couple of miles inland. Hope your friend's hip replacement goes well.

LA Wheelmen ride, 87 miles in the mountains with around 8500 feet of climbing. It was hot early and I didn't eat right, (you'd think I know by now), and I got severe nausea and struggled for the second half of the ride. Worst I've felt on a ride in years. Finished by getting a flat 1/4 mile from the car.

Went to 7-11 to get something, much confusion ensued. Got a Super Big Gulp and couldn't figure out why to Big Gulp cap wouldn't fit and later couldn't understand why she charged me $1.49 when the sign said Big Gulp for $1.00. Eventually I figured that out, too.

If you haven't had the opportunity yet, visit the real thing when you get to D.C. Now, that is a moving experience. I had mixed emotions of sadness and surprisingly, anger. I wonder if it takes people of our generation to understand The Wall?

One of the touching things I've experienced is when I chaparoned 8th graders on a trip to DC. The two things they were very respectful of, even reverent towards, was the Tomb of the Unknowns and the Wall. It kind of restored my faith in the future of the country, at least as far as these kids were concerned.

Spent Saturday morning doing a few leisurely miles.
The afternoon was spent at a memorial service for a friend’s father. He was a Navy vet, survived Pearl Harbor and a few other parties in the Pacific.

My best friend, Specialist Chris Behm, U.S.A., is on The Wall, as well as five of my school mates' fathers and 2 of our neighbors from my childhood. We have "The Wall, South" here in Pensacola as a part of Veteran's Memorial Park. It is an accurate, 1/3 scale replica set exactly as the original is in D.C. Nothing can prepare you for the feeling and the atmosphere when you go to The Wall, I have a rubbing of Chris' name in my photo book, I'll never let that get away. Rest in Peace Chris, I really miss you.
