well this is a strange one, its so smokey here that tomorrow, is probably gonna not be rideable
\And I am sure Denver Fox, being that he is much closer to the fires than I am is for sure not gonna be able to ride....(there is a huge forest fire about 70 miles or so south of denverand ,its smokey outside as I type this......

And, they have pre-evacuation notices for SE Douglas County - that's my county - but still about 50 miles away.

The smoke was much worse last year during June. In addition to the Waldo Canyon fire we had a lot of smoke from the big fires in Arizona and New Mexico blowing up this way.
I am about 20 miles south of the fire. We had a smoky night, but once the winds shifted to the south, I was able to ride in clean air.

I have family in Monument .... they're not in mandatory evac mode yet, but I think they're getting ready to go on a moment's notice. Hope all goes well there!

When we had fires in San Diego a few years back, I made the mistake of going on a bike ride as soon as the sky looked clear. I ended up coughing for a month after that ride. Next time, I'm going to read the particulate reports religiously, and not go out until the ash is truly out of the air.

These fires are terrible. Why doesnt the military fit water tanks in the bomb bays of B-52s and B-1 bombers and help put out these fires. The Air Force flys training flights anyway, they might as well do something useful while burning all that fuel. Specs say that a B-52 can carry 70,000 pounds of bombs. A squadron of B52s flying in train dropping that much water would go a long way to help snuffing out fires!!!

In the ultimate analysis, the slurry only slows the fire. The grunt work happens on the ground with fire lines, fire trucks, bulldozers and the like. In the final analysis, to be truly considered "controlled," every single spark in every single log and root must be cold to the touch. That is the "mop-up" phase of the fire. Many fires have restarted when this step was not done correctly.
