Can anyone help ID this frame?

I bought this about 2 years ago and it’s one of my favorite bikes. Seems like modern steel, like 853 or True Temper Platinum. Slack angles 72 degree head and seat tubes. Long point lugs. I bought it in the Bay Area and the seller only said that it was a custom frame for someone.

thank you!

From the image, it could be a '84 Trek 760. Or maybe a '87 Torelli Tretubi. Kind of looks like a '86 Schwinn Peloton, which is very close to a '79 Viner Special

I dunno. Feels more like a Santa Cruz of some sort. Maybe a Stigmata?

Fork is not original

The 60cm frame-only weighs about 4.5 lbs. 1 1/8 diameter tubing. 72 degree seat and head tube angles. Fits up to 40mm wide tires. Has a very lively feel, and the top tube seems pretty narrow gauge because I dinged it once without much of an impact.

it was slightly darker than a medium blue color when I bought it as a frameset only. It was sold with a Surly fork so I have never seen the original fork. It had two sets of eyelets in back when I got it, but since one had snapped off, I removed the other side. I think it had a number “5” on the BB shell.

thanks for any input. It’s a mystery to me.

The seat stay treatment will be a clue to the people who know these kinds of things, as well as rear dropout attachment and brand.

Obviously a touring frame with the braze ons, cantis, 3 bottle mounts.

Ellis Cycles?

Thanks, dedhed. The seat cluster looks like Ellis Cycles from the link you posted about fastback seatstays. I wonder if anyone else uses that setup.

Your picture is too dark to see the finer points of the stay detail.
I don't see the crimp in the stay on the Dave Wages work. https://www.elliscycles.com/

Yes you’re right. The seat stays are crimped where they meet the seat lug. I did see some other builders using that seat lug as well.

I do believe the rear dropouts are Shimano, but the frame was powdercoated, so I can’t see any lettering anymore.
