A little bit of effort goes a long way, and it certainly paid off for you! Very nice job - the results speak for themselves.

Looking forward to the final build pics of the SS.

That super sport was BEAT… that one felt like a lot of work compared to what I am used to. The pedals are really old wellgo platforms that took weeks to clean the rust off of. The only reason that I saved them is because I didn’t want to spend money on new ones. Although, they are actually rebuildable, and spin great now.

Nice job on both bikes. I wouldn't mind finding a super sport one of these days to use as a commuter.

Thanks. If I keep the super sport long term it will probably wind up with north road style bars.

Real nice clean up on those Schwinns! Super sports are great riding bikes. I have a blue one that’s a bit ugly.

years ago, mine was passed on shortly after acquisition.
No shade intended, just not a bike for big hills.
No regrets. Hope it has had a good life for others.
It was one owner, refurbed not long before sale and affordable. Eye candy and impulsiveness overcame common sense.

No offense taken. I’m pretty wide eyed on what the super sport is and isn’t. I had a sports tourer and superior in the past and those have moved on for the same reason as you… just didn’t like riding them. My gut tells me that if the super sport stays, it will end up with north road bars and I will keep in down in North Carolina as a vacation bike.

I would have a hard time keep an opaque green Schwinn. The color looks too sickly, definitely not my top choice.

Why not? It's a great derailleur and is more than appropriate for a classic Schwinn...

The long cage Alvits are a particular pain. In my experience on a '73 Super Sport, the chain tends to ride over the inner cage plate, causing the RD to jam and pull backwards. The first time this happened, it jammed the entire drivetrain and bent the RD.

After that, I rebuilt the entire RD and replaced everything that was damaged, resulting in a mint RD. What did it do during the very first test on my stand? Jam exactly as it had before.

I used one on my Raleigh Sprite for years and never had problems with it

Important and relevant question: What chain did you use and what freewheel?

My experiences have always been with a period (usually original) 5-speed Sedis chain - the kind with the significantly curved links; they look like a narrow singlespeed chain - paired with its original Atom or a Shimano-made Atom clone under the Schwinn Approved branding.

Stock chain and freewheel, I rarely upgrade these old bikes unless components are severely worn or damaged

One of my SuperSports is done up as a casual upright conversion. Just the 39 tooth front ring and an indexed 6 speed rear. Pleasant is the word.

Anyone know offhand what the stem clamp diameter is? I’m wondering if I can get a cheap pair of chrome wald bars for upright riding.

I got the last roll of bar tape and installed the cables on both bikes. I’ve test ridden both and I believe I can finally call these finished.

I do suspect that the super sport was in a front end collision and is slightly tweaked. The front rim was steel (replaced), the paint at the tube joints looks like it was stressed a bit. Either way, it does not feel squirrelly when I ride it.

Suntour derailleur. Mine did not come with the Huret, or I would have kept it.

Tire scraper. Not sure if I actually want to keep this on here.

Again…. Not sure if I like the noise from these.

Retro bike, retro house

And then the varsity:

So shiny!

I actually kind of like this version of the varsity decal.
