I had heard the turning radius inside the shifter is quite small/tight and that is what causes fast wear/breakage. In any case, I have come to accept this and am sensitive to the earliest signs of cable fraying (subtle delay in going to the smaller cogs) and have a bunch of spare cables on the pegboard.
I have tried using the fancier coated cables but they seem to wear just as fast. It’s not really friction but repeated bending of the cable, I think, that causes the problem.

I hate to say this publicly since my wife and I own a combined stable of:
10 speed - 2
11 speed - 4
12 speed - 2
but, I always felt and still do, that 9 speed Shimano was amazing and bulletproof except for Shimano 9 speed bar end levers which are junk.

Cable talk reminds me that I’ve never broken a cable on my tandem with Ultegra 10 speed at 5435 miles. Damn, I’ve probably jinxed myself.

Interestingly, 9 speeds is one thing I've never owned. I had 5 when I was a ute. The Cannondale I bought in 1995 had 7, which I converted to 8 a year later. The Ritchey (1997) had 8, converted to 10 in 2019. The Bianchi (2007) has 10. The Battaglin (built in 2007) has 10. The Canyon(2020) has 11, as does the Litespeed(built in 2022). My various C&V bike have 6, 7, or 8. But never 9. Funny, that.

One thing I like about 7-speed RSX and 8-speed 105 brifters is the metal cyclops caps.
Much better than the plastic ones that don't last very long for me, so I run around with unfinished-looking brifters:

The 6600 shifters (cables come out of the side of hood) don’t break nearly as often as the 6700 (cable routed under bar tape). It seems the under-the-bar-tape design requires tighter turning radius of cable which we think leads to shorter lifespan.

Our plane and accommodation reservations are in for our trip to Mallorca in April which will culminate with riding the 312. Now I have to figure best way to get my bike there. I am looking at a hard shell case on Craigslist that looks pretty good.

Agreed. I have 2 sets of Dura Ace 9s levers and derailleurs that still work perfectly. One set is on my 2001 Colnago. The first gen of Shimano 10s (before they went to hidden cables) was really good, too.

My Mom smoked, from college age or younger till she was in her 70s. I never smoked for a variety of reasons. One was that I used to be assigned to wash the windows in her car, and the cigarettes left a tarry residue on them which I could see on the paper towel I was using. Another was watching her do what everyone did BITD - toss the lit butt out the window when she was done

I do agree that the smell of a lit cigarette or pipe is nice. Almost relaxing on some level. My dad used to smoke pipes and I still remember his different Amphora tobacco packs around the house. He quit when I was a kid, but he kept one or two of the packs because he liked the smell.

Last time I had what seemed to be a creaking cleat, I tightened the screws by backing each one off like half a turn before tightening them down again, just to get rid of any kind of stiction. I can't remember whether it worked.
