It's cracked sometimes? Maybe it's the wheel?
I had a Nishiki break the chainstay all the way through, just in front of the left dropout. It was making noise so when I got home I looked at it and the axle was bent. This happened to me a lot with 6 speed freewheel axles so I popped in a new axle and went riding. Still had the noise and I felt like a real dumbass for riding it with a broken frame.

Short story: I go out for a 20 miler today, 35º with light winds, and I come across a stretch of ice on my local trail. I decide to walk and it's rough and me and the bike are slipping and sliding. I fall hard on my left side, nothing hurt, me or the bike, but I decide to look at my Apple Watch because being the nanny that is, I'm sure it wants to know if I've fallen. By the time I get to it, the damn thing is calling 9-1-1 without even asking. I get it hung up and sure enough, my phone starts ringing and it's county emergency services.
"You called; what's your emergency?"
"My watch called you because I fell but I'm ok.
"You sure you're ok?"
"Yes, I'm fine."
"You must have fallen hard for your watch to directly call 9-1-1."
"Well, it was on ice and I'm fine."
"ARE YOU SURE/"
"Yes, thank you for calling me back."
"One last time, do you need assistance?"
I finally convinced them that I'm fine and they hang up. I tell my wife about it and that I'm going to disable fall detection. She objected.
Anyway, I wonder what parameters the watch uses to go direct to calling 9-1-1.

My LBS guy was a rep for Nishiki so he had access to a bunch of frames. He sold me a Seral touring frame for $50 in 1989. It's the one I went cross country on. It did not break.

This weekend is supposed to be wet, but not wild. Looks like half an inch over the whole time. Saturday's the monthly SF Peninsula C&V Ride, which was canceled by rain the last two months. Tomorrow's rain is SUPPOSED TO BE limited to the afternoon/evening, so at the moment we're cautiously optimistic about the ride actually happening. Sunday is a different matter. For that, Weather Underground just says "Rain", but only 0.16 inches, so that's not strangling any frogs.

I don't believe you. According to what I read on these forums, steel frames last forever. It's only crabon fiber frames that break so easily.

According to my Lance Armstrong training book, no frame should be used after one season. Especially Aluminum. I underlined and highlight the passage, put a book mark on the page and left it on my wife’s night stand. The next day it was on my bag with no evidence that she read the passage. It’s like she wants me to die.
