Using a frame fit pump with a pump clip
My trusty old Zefal HP finally bit the dust today. I've had it since the early 80s, so I can't complain about it failing at this point. Looking on eBay I only see frame fit variants of the HPx. It seems even the largest size (HPX-4) might not fit a couple of my frames. I already have pump clips on a number of bikes (AFA and Campy #632 and #648 clips). Will the frame fit heads nestle properly into my various pump clips?

The HPx handle is very similar to that of your old HP (just adds a dimple), so any clip that would have worked with your HP will be fine with an HPx. Just set the clip height so that you need to compress the pump slightly. Another thought is to keep the HPx in non-X (i.e., pumping, non-compressing) mode, in which case it should work the same as an HP. If you liked your old HP, you will be equally happy with an HPx -- they are what I use on most of my road bikes.

I seem to recall that the HPX has a recess for a pin type pump clip, like the old HP. You could also use a Zefal plastic pump clip, or one of the old school chrome steel pin type pump clips
(ie 648). Might look a little neater than an umbrella clip, but I suspect that type will work fine too.
Is there room behind your seat tube? For older bikes with long chainstays, this position can sometimes work.

AFA umbrellas will fit the dimpled end. Campy umbrellas will not.
Within the past 2 years I have also lost two HPX 4s to old age. I replaced them both with HPX3

Skip, what length HP do you need? I have a pile of them from takeoffs.

Here's a Zefal HPX mounted to my 1963 Jack Taylor Sports. A frame pump umbrella clip holds the handle end. The little feet snug in at the seat tube / top tube junction as normal. I had to fashion a shim to get the clip to fit on the top tube because these are usually sized for use on the seat tube.

Thanks nlerner . Mine is about 19 inches uncompressed. I'd be happy to buy a couple from you so I don't have to move the pump between bikes as often and so I have a backup, just in case I wreck one fending off a wayward dog trying to use my leg as a tooth sharpener.
Included in the picture is a slightly longer spare parts pump I got from another BF member. I mention it only because it turned out to be almost entirely incompatible with mine. Somewhere along the way it seems Zéfal changed the barrel diameter slightly, making all parts related to the barrel useless to swap between pumps.

Skip, here’s a pic of my stash. The lower two seem to measure about 19”. I’m glad to send you all four for the cost of shipping. Spare parts for backup!

Like @nlerner, I've acquired a stash/hoard of Zefal HPs over the years... I got my first waaaay back in '76! They're my go-to since that's what I've had since the mid-late '70s! Pretty much indestructible unless you use them to bash bad doggie-nogginsl I've lost three to that over the years.. I grab them anywhere I see them - garage sales, co-ops etc...
BTW. I ditched my '75 Fuji's original Primus frame pump with it's screw-on valvestem hose connection in favor of the Zefal HP's quick-connect in '77 and Never looked back!!!
