Bianchi Eros BB

I’ve got a 97 or 99 Bianchi Eros that needs a new bottom bracket. Anyone know the specs on what fits and choices of manufacturer?
thanks - Mc2

I would give some info like what cranks you have and that will inform what taper you need. Then I would measure your bottom bracket spindle assuming it is correct for that bike and that wasn't the issue. Then you need to measure your bb shell and if 68mm probably English threaded and if 70mm it would be Italian threaded.

Sometimes the bottom bracket will list the measurements on it and that will solve your problems. The actual bike doesn't so much matter because if someone decided to swap the cranks any original specs wouldn't matter. Plus if you are unsure of what model year you have specs could have changed.

IIRC, the "Eros" is a Japan-built frame, and should be English thread. If you find a "Made in Italy" sticker, it could be Italian thread.

N.B. English thread bottom bracket cups will be marked "1.37 x 24" while Italian thread cups will be marked "36 x 24." If there are no cup markings, or the marking are obscure, measure the inside diameter of the shell: English will be 35mm and Italian 36mm. While English bottom bracket shells are typically 68mm wide and Italian shells 70mm wide, there are exceptions that make shell width an unreliable indicator of bottom bracket thread spec.

1998 & 1999 are made in Italy

The 1998 is TIG welded on the bottom bracket and is lugged almost everywhere else. The 1999 is TIG welded everywhere. Both came with a Campy Mirage triple with a square bottom bracket.

Both have threaded forks and Megapro steel frames. The later Eros models may have been built in Asia but these are some of the last Italian steel frames.

For the best chance to get the "right" BB one could take the current BB out and just measure it. This wouldn't rely on someone else's memory or what year the bike wasn't made in. Andy

Production of the Eros seemed to have moved back and forth a few times. My '91 and '92 Eros were made in Taiwan.

Yep - forgot the very early ones were from Asia, too. Thanks for setting the record straight!

Who knows what possible crankset changes might have been done on a 25 year old bike? As an example: My 2007 Look 595 has had 3 different cranksets since I have owned it, all Campagnolo, but 2 different bottom bracket types. What the bike came originally is not necessarily what it has now

FWIW: The green or red 97 Eros was made in Italy and outfitted with a Campagnolo Mirage triple crankset. Not certain of the bottom bracket but my CDI is basically the same bike with double crank and the bottom bracket on it was Campy's SC-S English threaded cartridge. If I remember correctly the AC-H cartridge was available to the same specs but had a hollow rather than solid spindle? The triple would take the 115 mm spindle version.
