Shimano introduced Hyperglide cogs but not Hyperglide chains for 1989. The result was a large number of chain failures. I attended a presentation by Shimano later that year where one shop manager asked when they would replace his “pile” of broken chains the shop had warrantied over the last few months.
The next year Shimano introduced Hyperglide chains, with their peened-over pins and dedicated joining pins.
Ah, the good old days.

I'm struck by how much that MTB U-brake looks like a current Paul's centerpull:

the late 80's early 90's till 00's were shimano's full steam ahead period of development.

Always liked that Dura Ace edition, especially the dark anodized shift and brake levers. Still use a set of those 7402 brake levers--some of the nicest ever made.

Not sure where they got the idea that Shimano was "entering" the seat post market with the Prestige steel one; There were Shimano seatposts long before 1988/89.
