In other bike tool news, I found a shock pump in the van!

I was pretty sure I'd grabbed one at some point but it wasn't in the bike toolbox so I thought I was SOL for a little while.

Looking forward to ride again, the ass end of the Ellsworth was sitting at about 70% sag on my last outing.

Ride was good. Luckily, 5 of the riders took a different route so the rest of us were mostly cohesive. I still had to break us into two a few times on busy roads, but it was all good.

I dropped the Saturn off at the shop before the ride for what may be its last oil change. I mentioned the shudder and they checked some codes and told me likely suspect is EGR valve but would cost some $$$$ to run the full diagnostic. Since the car is working reasonably well and will not pass next inspection at end of the year, I chose to skip that for now.

Does it have an EGR valve like this?

If it does the only way it could affect the idle is if it is stuck open. If it's stuck open either there is a piece of carbon lodged in the pintle or carbon has built up on the pintle preventing it from closing. Take it off and look at it. You might need a new gasket if you do.

If it has failed closed or will not operate it will have no affect on the idle.

Also, just because it has an EGR code doesn't necessarily mean there is something currently wrong with the EGR. Nor does it mean the EGR is the cause of your issue. It's pretty simple to remove the valve, though.

I think it looks kinda like that. I actually took it out and cleaned it with heavy duty solvent about 12 years ago but my memory is not perfect. I am not gonna mess with anything unless the shuddering gets worse. Car will be retired at end of year regardless.

Turns out the stock lug wrench supplied with the Fit is a piece of crap. The lug nuts are gorilla tight and the wrench won’t engage well enough to let me stand on the end for leverage. Had to call AAA.

I would ne clueless as to where to look for an EGR valve. Maybe somewhere around the exhaust manifold. Cars have changed so much since my shadetree mechanic days.

Roscoe update.

His bloodwork came back age appropriate for kidney function. Heart is good. The vet is perplexed why he is consuming so much water. For now monitor and report back in a month for chest and abdomen x ray if condition remains the same. Sooner if it worsens. So far it sounds like we limit his water to about 24 ounces/day and we've dodged a bullet for now. He's 14 and I'm grateful for every day.

Bonus time with Roscoe is A-OK. We count our lucky stars when ours go past 10, which is basically the average, and pretty true based on our anecdotal evidence. Georgia-Mae just turned 12, and like you, we're grateful.

Rango's 14 1/2, and Greyhound loggevity is usually given as "12-14", so I'm cherishing the extra time.

Since he turned 14 back in September, I've been hypervigilant about his eating.- the first sign of Zeena's decline was when she stopped being our chowhound. So, on the occasional day when he's not all that hungry, I get anxious. Then he wolfs down his food and bugs us for more. And there are days when he's a little slow getting up, and walking a little stiffly. Then he'll come galloping in from the yard, leap over the back steps and galumph through the house, followed by a minute or two of jump-spins.

They've been in use for almost 50 years. Some are very simple things and many cars don't have them because their NOx emissions are low enough. Some engines use valve overlap to introduce exhaust gas to the intake instead of using an EGR valve.

Some are quite complex and cause headaches for technicians.

The new cone wrench arrived, so I went to work and re-did the hubs. They hardly needed it! Immaculate bearing tracks with no hint of pitting, the grease was still grease, not wax, and no evidence of water penetration. Also, the original cone adjustment was nothing short of incredible. I was watching a video yesterday suggesting you should tighten the cones down till there's SOME play, so it would be taken up when you tighten the QR. These have always had zero play and still nice and free once the QR is tight. I used that as my goal in adjusting the cones. I think I got close.

My big fear in all this was that I'd order everything to rebuild the wheels and then discover the hubs were too worn. Nope! Should be good for thousands more miles! If only I can build the wheels good enough!
