Please tell us your age.
I turn 50 on Saturday...
1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
I have 2 bikes, one a 2005 Mountain bike which is set up as a utility/hybrid, it's due a rebuild this coming winter. The other a 1975 road bike that a neighbour was throwing away, that I rebuilt last year.
2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
No, I should, but generally no.....
3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I haven't, I used to be about 15-20kg heavier, getting the weight down a bit (have about another 20kg to go), has allowed me to keep a relatively even keel, in that lower weight and getting older have become more of an equilibrium.
4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I biked from the age of 6 until 25 then stopped for a while, started up again around age 45, been doing it ever since.
5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Medium recreational rides on the road bike, which spends the winter on a trainer, and a lot of utility riding on the mountain bike...
6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Around 1600 km per year, not that much, but the riding season around here is around 6 months, although I started using the trainer more last fall....

Welcome Wog, but it seems to me like you have already been in the 50+ forum a long time.
Enjoy and keep us informed about your n+1 (not your bike).

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
2009 Giant Defy
2009 Trek FUel EX8
2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Multi Vitamin
3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
None....better shape than I was in my 30's
4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Been pretty active my whole life, running, martial arts, biking, etc!
5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Long road rides of 50 or miles or more. Also, 15 plus miles of mountain biking!
6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Mountain biking is about 2000 miles a year, and road biking about 5000 miles a year.
At one point I had weighed in at 250 pounds. I knew I had put on weight but not to that extreme. I am 6-4 so the weight did not make me feel all that bad until I looked at some pictures my wife and I had taken of us in Bermuda. Then I realized, man I have got to take the weight off. I looked puffy and wondered why my clothes had gotten snug. Anyways, I started going to the gym back in 04 and started running and biking more and now weigh 215. This year I road 4 centuries back to back and had a younger guy compliment me on climbing the hills faster than their group. I did feel very good after that and then realized my hard work did not go unnoticed!

Bike 2: 2005 Raleigh Prestige Carbon/Alloy w/Ultegra 6600 Groupo, American Classic CR-420 Wheelset

Just One A Day, Mens 50+ Advantage and no other meds of any kind.
3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Well thats hard to say in my case. Up until 4 months ago I had been off a bike for 20+ years, so its hard to say I have slowed. I feel myself getting into better shape and really feeling stronge on the bike.
4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I rode a lot in high school and all through my college years, but started slowing down in the mid to late 80's until I just stopped riding all together.
5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Short faster type rides (to me atleast)
6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Right now I'm just trying to get out everynight or every other night for 1 hour or better. I have been averaging 15-16 miles in that hour. I have been keeping track of my rides this past month and have rode 18 days out of the month so far totaling 309 miles...

I'm 51 years old.
1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
A Specialized Crosstrail Sport.
2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Multivitamins in my morning smoothie.
3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Hard to tell, as I was a couch potato most of my life.
4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Just a few months now. Quit smoking 4 years ago, gained a lot of weight, became a gym rat, lost the weight, got addicted to exercise instead of smoking. Looking for variety in my workouts, so I bought the bike this spring. Now I'm addicted to riding. Beats the hell out of smoking.
5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Long rides, I try to improve my time each ride.
6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
I do a 26-mile round trip three days a week. Looking to work my way up to 50 mile rides. I'm near Seattle, so I can ride almost all year long, will probably do 3,000 + this year.

At about 30 I was trying to lose weight (was a fatty all my life) and got in to biking for an additional form of exercise. 6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage? 3-6 days a week depending on time energy and life! As for annual mileage never have tracked it but back in the day it would have been 20 ish miles/day from april to Sept averaging 5 days/week. Please tell us your age.
Just turned 50 (ugh)
1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
2003 Merckx Team SC, 2000 Mondonico Futura Leggera, 1980 Peugeot PVN Super Competition
2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Fish oil, a mens mutlivitamin, 81 mg aspirin, and Slo-Niacin (but I may nix that when the full study results are published this Fall)
3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Well, I used to race (USCF Junior, Cat 3 as well as Collegiate) so I'd have to say I've slowed down a lot. But I still have fun riding and try to keep my performance in the "here and now" and not compare to my racer-boy days. It takes me longer to warm up, longer to recover and I developed exercise-induced asthma which doesn't help.
4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
All my life. I got seriously into road riding at 15. I have yet to ride a mountain bike, so I guess I'll always be a roadie.
5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
These days I'd say fitness riding. I still try to ride with some sort of "training goal" in mind - intervals, recovery, hill sprints, whatever, and just compete with myself.
6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Not as often as I'd like! Probably 4 days a week. Mileage varies. I try to ride as far as I can based on the time I have available - usually about an hour during the week and longer on the weekends.
7. Do you do any other type of physical activities - weight lifting, skiing, running, etc.?
Strength training two or three days per week. I was swimming for a number of years (though I'm not a swimmer), but stopped last year because the pool fees were getting expensive. Swimming was very relaxing and was good for "active recovery".

We have had two months rain here so I am not getting much riding. I do ride on the trainer (hate it). Still get in the gym three days a week and do a little city riding between drops.
Sure be happy when I can do my 20 miles three days a week again.

Some questions:
Please tell us your age.
I'll be 62 in November
1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
My road bike is a Trek Madone 4.7; my hybrid is a Trek FX 7.6
2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Just the old Centrum Silver & Vitamin C
3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I've been pretty active all my life: baseball, volleyball, racquetball, golf. Started serious biking in 2009.
4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Probably been biking on & off for last 15 years.
5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
I get in 100-150 miles a week: 20-25 mile "push" rides (17-19 mph) weekdays; 35-50 mile rec rides on weekends; doing my first century ride in September.
6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
I have about 2600 miles in so far this year;
I enjoy reading these posts to break up my day at work.

56 and riding to live and living to ride
1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
I ride a Fezzari Fore' CR2 road bike.
2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
I take a multi-vitamin, and a fish oil capsule daily.
3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I feel that I have not slowed down. I am pushing the envelope more.
4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Seriously biking for the last 2 years. I have always liked to ride but never got serious until recently.
5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
I do mostly long rides 40- 100 miles. I do some shorter sprint type rides a couple of times a week of 30-40 miles in which I push the bike as hard as I can for the duration.
6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
I bike 3-5 times per week averaging around 200 miles each week when the weather is nice. In the colder months the average usually drops off some so I don't know what my annual mileage is.
Perhaps you might indicate your age on your reply?? I am 56 but will turn 57 in another month.

Much of the perception of what folks 50+ can and should do fitness-wise, in the fitness world, in the press, in MD's eyes, is generally very light modified exercises - that kind of thing. The things that folks 50+ do as expressed in this forum just blows that concept away.

At almost 72, I swim, walk, bicycle (road and mountain), lift weights, stretch. We have a couple of guys in their mid 70's preparing for their first century. We have a guy 77, who tandems thousands of miles a year with his wife.
I don't know how old you are, but whatever the age, I would guess that there is a lot you can do. Howver, I am not familiar with your story except your son is 50+. Perhaps there is a lot more to it.
Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
