I have an item coming from Germany that:
https://www.ups.com/track?loc=en_US&...1/trackdetails
The world definitely still isn't back to normal.
- Shipped Monday with a delivery date of Friday
- Cleared customers fast on Tuesday, updated the delivery date to Thursday/today, but
- Late Weds it says the shipment status has changed and they don't have a delivery date.
- I got an email 45 minutes ago saying I can follow on the truck on the map to watch them deliver it today.

I only use usps Priority for outgoing small stuff, and in general outgoing has been significantly smoother these past few months than Dec-Feb. My worst was a $500+ item shipped early Jan that took 5wks to get from Jersey to MD, a distance of less than 200mi. At one point when it hit a p.o. less than 10mi from the buyer we both were thrilled, but then popped up in TX 2-3 days later.
Incoming wasn't great then, either, especially with 1st class and parcel shipments. That has mostly improved significantly for me as well.
I have no inside scoop on any of this, but what I heard reported was that when usps was slammed by the covid-holiday rush/staffing probs things really snowballed, and there were packages piling up at local/hub po with no space on outgoing trucks. The weird routing happened because they were desperate just to keep packages moving and make room for more incoming. If a truck was heading to TX with some extra space, that's where the package went, hoping it could re-routed from there. Huge volume combined with staff shortages from huge covid spikes causes turbulence.
I'll also say that my local postie picking up all my outgoing packages for almost a full year kept me a lot safer. I tipped him big-ish at xmas.

I ordered tires on Amazon and it was a third party vendor in the Netherlands that was supplying them. Much potential for disaster but they arrived in 13 calendar days. I had a similar experience ordering parts from Italy.

Noticing a far bigger performance gap between USPS and -- well, everyone else -- in recent months. Very relieved when I buy something and get an e-mail with a non-USPS tracking number.

These threads crack me up.
In trans logistics, this is incredibly common.
Small parcel- delays.
LTL- delays.
Truckload- delays.
So yeah, there are delays with the mail too.
What else does anyone think will happen when an organization is required to fund things that dont make them money, since those costs need to come from somewhere?
I had a UPS LTL shipment that weighed 300# go from the ship location to 130mi west the next day, to 200mi south and sit for 2 days, to 300mi northeast and sit for 2 days, then be handed off to a partner carrier and deliver a day later to a location that is 170mi northwest.
The distance from the shipper to receiver is 120mi straight north. It took 9 days and travelled 800mi in total.
Our system is overly stressed- more goods are moving and delays happen. Nobody likes it, but it clearly isnt unique to one individual or one company. FedEx has delays, UPS has delays, etc etc.

keep in mind the guy in charge of the postal system wants it to fail, and told congress, "you have to put up with me"
until the three nominated postal board of governors are confirmed, it will be the same.
The cost of scrapping all those sorting machines last year, and removal of mail drop boxes.

"Maybe" this!!!
The dreaded 'in transit' notice is like the Bermuda triangle. I had a package from outside Philadelphia destined to the DC area, get sent to Jacksonville, FL where it disappeared. It surfaced 2 weeks later back in PA, and then came to the DC area (MD) and sat again. It has gotten better lately, but as long as the elected officials in the US Congress continue to delude themselves that an essential government service is best run like a for profit business the outcome will be guano.
The "maybe" is because this was a truly bipartisan bill that moved at the speed of light in Congressional time (3 DAYS). Here is the short synopsis of the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006
* Introduced in the House as the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act (H.R. 6407) by Tom Davis (R-VA) on December 7, 2006, and cosponsored by Republican John M. McHugh of New York and Democrats Henry Waxman of California and Danny K. Davis of Illinois.
* Committee consideration by House Government Reform Committee
* Passed the House on December 8, 2006 (voice vote)
* Passed the Senate on December 9, 2006 (unanimous consent)
* Signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 20, 2006.
The entire Congress cannot run from this disaster. The 3 new appointees will not be a majority.

Now we have a Postmaster General who is eager to drive the last nail in the coffin of Benjamin Franklin's idea to unify the nation via post offics and post roads,
End of rant.

It does seem clear that our transport systems are overstressed, with increased shipping delays for all carriers.
But I reckon the deliberate policy changes/decisions made by DeJoy and the usps board caused additional stress not seen by ups/fedex:
-dismantling/destroying sorting machines
-decreasing the number of dropoff boxes
-routing all 1st class by truck
-requiring trucks to leave at a set time regardless of load volume
-not allowing additional loads/pickups later in the day
-am I missing anything?
At least I'm not aware of any comparable deliberate ups/fedex corporate policy changes that exacerbated handling/shipping delays.

There must be some sort of postal gravity well in Jacksonville. I've had at least 2 or 3 zig-zag routed items go through Jax. It's not quite _in_ the Bermuda Triangle, but it's close.....

Ok, so I started this by buying a set of hubs back in March, they did their march through that list of scans above, then nothing since April 9th.
Today, a month and a day after that, I get this from the seller:
"> We were very fortunate to see these, assuming they got lost
> They were returned to us after 5 weeks lost with a note from Canada and US
> authorities saying something to the effect that the materials contained are
> not shippapple by this method.
> Do you have any alternative addresses?"
I have asked to see a pic/scan of the note (I believe them, the package was in the USPS system...)
I've also asked if they will try again, they're in Maryland, Mt Airy, anybody close want to help?
Just to be clear, I get bike parts all the time from the US in the post.

I sent a tool to a guy about 40 miles north of me here by FedEx as I have had no problems with them. Four days later the customer called to tell me that he had not received his tool. I tracked it and it was still in Ventura so I called to tell them I would pick it up and deliver it myself. They said it wasn't there. I FINALLY( their phone system sucks) got through to the hub where it goes next and nope no package. I was told to wait a couple of days to see where it ended up. Well the next day it showed up in New Jersey! When I called they said that it would go on a truck and would arrive 4-5 days later. I asked why they couldn't put it on a plane as the box was about 5" cube and just under 1/2 lb. They said absolutely not it has to stay ground! All told it took about 2 1/2 weeks to get to my customer! When I asked for a refund ,"oh we don't issue refunds because of COVID" . Wow! REALLY? They are all struggling and there is no "GOOD" carrier anymore.

I got a letter/package in the mail yesterday that was mailed by another BF member around 12/7/20. It appears the original letter was damaged. Someone repackaged and resent.

Really? I've had very few problems with USPS. Only a few times in the past 12 years has a package been rerouted improperly. Only twice in that span have I not received the package, and I'm not sure if I trusted the source/sender. A lot of stuff comes from all the way across the continent in just a few days. I guess "ymmv."

Update to my USPS saga: Received the following tracking update this morning:
So it took 18 days to move from Boston to Brookline, essentially 4 miles, and this mysterious delivery attempt occurred while I was home, but no package was left nor did anyone ring the bell. Of course, I requested and received a refund from the seller, so if it does ever arrive, I need to take the time to return it.

Had to add this, had to!
2 tires and 4 tubes
Keep in mind that Milan, MI is outside of Detroit and only 50 miles to the border.
Package shipped by truck to Detroit to the "Detroit MI Network Clearing Center" (whatever that is) then to LA (via Chicago) by truck, then flown from LA to Toronto, Canada

Any time I have to order something, I will pay extra for UPS/FedEx delivery. If USPS is the 'default' shipping method, I will contact the merchant and ask them to ship it via one of the other carriers, and I'll pay for it. I've had too many packages lost in the USPS system.
What really irks me is the practice of shipping via, say, UPS, who handles the package cross country in two days, and then, for some reason, it gets transferred to your local USPS facility for final delivery, and that takes weeks - if at all.

I quit selling on ebay because too many items were just flat out disappearing and when you file 'lost package' claims they seem to forget about you or tie it up until you've already handled it yourself (at your own loss, of course). TIP: If you send something insured and it takes longer than it should, just file an insurance claim. Don't ever ask them to find it first. They will keep you tied up until your time runs out and then tell you that YOU waited too long to file a claim.
