Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Can I push my Ultegra 6700ss to 30t low gear

Hi all, new here and I havent been able to find another thread with this exactly, but Im trying to work out whether my Ultegra rd-6700 SS will cope with a 11-30 cassette. I run a compact (50-34) Chainring, so that meets the spec for the 6700-ss (16T), but the spec also lists a tooth capacity at 33 T, with a 28t max rear cog. I want to got to at least a 30t -preferably 32t, so it would push the tooth limit to 35.

Does anyone have any experience in pushing the limits on the rear derailleur capacity and available to offer any advice?

thank you

I think you are going to have to try it to find out for sure. I have 5700ss 12/32 with a 50/36 crank set and it shifts up to the 32 T with no problem, b screw turned in. From what I have seen and read, it will usually work, but not always. I cannot remember what the bike or what crank set was, but I know I had a set up that the DR would not shift up to the 32.

IIRC, there was 6700 and 6700A, with the A officially allowing for the 30t large cog. I've used a regular 6700 with a 30t, worked fine but YMMV. There are frame specs involved but it's definitely worth a try.

A longer hanger like a wolftooth might let you clear the bigger cog if that is an issue. However the hanger sometimes cost almost as much as a new DR that is capable of handling it.

Besides clearing the physically bigger cog, it also needs to be able to handle the chain slack created when going from the Big/Big combo to the Small/Small combo.

Knowing the exact model and version of your DR will help some.

If you are just needing reassurance from others then realize that their experience might not be your experience because of factors unique to your bike.

However if you try it and it doesn't work, then a new DR shouldn't be too much more cost to bear once you find out. Though if you bought one of those expensive longer hangers then you now have something you don't need any more with the new DR.

Thank you for your comments; appreciated. I think I'm going to change the DR to one that can handle it clearly.

I've done 6700 RD short cage to a 32t cassette. Chain wrap was fine as I dropped to 46t from the stock 50t big ring. If you keep the 50t you'll probably need a mid or long cage RD.

Thanks tFunk. I'm trying a wolftooth hanger extension first and will trial it. Cheers

The Wolf Tooth won't give you more chain wrap, though. The 6700 will probably clear your 30t or 32t but the overall chain wrap capacity may be an issue.

Wolftooth Roadlink $21.95

i use them to push 50/34 compact fronts, 11-36 rear 11-speeds with Ultegra GS RD’s. No issues. Even on a Di2.
I use them to push 50/34 and 52/36 fronts, 11-34 rear 11-speeds with Ultegra and Dura Ace SS RD’s, no issues.

My 50/34 front, 11-32 rear 6700 SS RD does not use a Roadlink and is fine.

My next build is. 50/39/28 front and 13-29 rear. 6700 RD, no Roadlink, should be interesting.
