Steel frame under $1,200?
Looking to build up a new addition to the small stable.
Will mostly be used on the road but will also see some occasional towpaths, etc...
Looking for something a bit out of the ordinary if that is possible within this budget?

If you open it to used bikes & frames, you have to go by what matches your specs and strikes your fancy.

Just a steel frame for under $1200 or a complete steel framed bike for under $1200?

Or a Soma FogCutter. It'll handle up to a 38mm tire, fine for gravel paths and such
Soma makes nice frames, I like my Smoothie

Black Mountain MCD
All City Space Horse
All City Cosmic Stallion($150 over)
Soma Double Cross Disc
Soma Wolverine
Jamis Renegade
Soma Fog Cutter
Ribble CGR 725
Norco Search XR S
Some of these have a carbon fork and some a steel fork.
Geometry varies a good bit, so some will feel twitching and faster steering than others. Some will feel more relaxed than others.
No idea what's in stock in your size and with the geometry you want.

No Soma Double Cross.
I have one and it's a nice ride... light... but it's a QR dropout for rim brakes, which is fine.
Now they have the disc brake version still with QR dropout.
Consider QR only for rim brakes.
If you are going with disc brake, choose a frame and fork with thru-axle design.
My vote is for Black Mountain MCD with steel fork....

The Secan is $1840usd right now. Its nuts. That is $620 more than when I bought my Secan frameset 22months ago.
The Faran is at least closer to the stated budget as its $1343usd right now. An All City Cosmic Stallion with carbon fork costs $50 less.
I have one, so clearly I like these suggestions, they may be too much though.

I like the look of flatmount brakes more than post mount, so All City has the benefit there.
Pretty sure the All City comes with thru axles while Black Mountain doesnt, so check on that and account for it if needed.
The All City has a carbon fork which makes for a lighter overall frameset, if that matters to you.
All City paint schemes something I geek over, but owning a Black Mountain frame I can say that the paint has been very reliable even if it isnt a cool fade.
All City tubing is heat treated and seamless. Black Mountain is heat treated and seamed. There is no effective difference. The Black Mountain tubing is 8/5/8 for the top and down tube and the seat tube is 8/6 for a 27.2mm seatpost. I dont know what All City tubing butting is- they wont say. Both are good in the end.
Trail is significantly different between the two bikes. A quick glance of geometry shows thatll be the biggest difference.
The All City is 65mm of trail with a 700c 42mm tire.
The Black Mountain is 49mm of trail with a 650b 48mm tire.

I meant that i dont think the frameset comes with thru axles included. Instead, you have to buy the thru axles separately.
https://blackmtncycles.com/shop/fram...v1-3-frameset/
Either way, the frame update is that there is no plan for more road + frames right now. 59cm is the only size left.

And the fact that 59cm is my size is irrationally appealing lol

Janis Renegade or Bombtrack. It looks like that Soma does not have a replaceable der. hanger? The Bombtracks have fantastic paintwork!

Check out Milwaukee bikes through Ben's cycles, right in line with good steel and US production.
