BOC question

A few days ago I received 76 pounds of craptastic stuff, which I actually paid for on fleaBay, more or less on a whim. I'll wind up keeping a few small things, and am trying to sell off enough stuff to break even, and I have had fun sorting through everything. However...

I still wind up with all sorts of stuff I will never use. I mean, who needs 18 bottom bracket spindles (some Shimano, but mostly low-end Chinese/Taiwanese products as far as I can tell)? I have several NOS 1" threadless headsets. I'll probably toss at least one of them in there. A number of hub shells. I have a bazillion axles, cone nuts, lock nuts, half skewers, stuff no sane person would want (but most of which I have now sorted into bins).

Question is, are people interested in stuff like this? Are we all roadies with no interest in all that MTB stuff? Is there any interest in small hard parts?

I'm kinda between being a roadie and mnt rider, I'm more a tourer/utility rider (whatever paths those take me). Small parts I think are good things too! swap out the bigger stuff

As it turns out, I sent a message to mb158127 and he's going to pass, so a message was sent to smontanaro a few minutes ago. I'm pretty confident I can get the BOC back out the chute today.

BTW, there are two broken Simplex front derailleurs that I'm yanking out of the box to put in the trash. I can't see there being much demand for the parts off these things. That makes a total of 5 of these puppies I have seen first-hand that are broken.

Good deal - I'm sure smontanaro will have no problem with receiving the Box early

Too bad we're still seeing borked stuff in the box. Note to all: broken stuff is a no-no! Serviceable items only, please; thanks!

Good to see we're still rolling right along. BTW, we celebrate the Box's birthday on the 30th of this month

If you just want to get rid of some of that stuff and it won't all fit in the box, there used to be a pay it forward thread too.

I managed to get the box to the post office about 5 minutes before they were ready to close, so Skip should see the box by mid-week at the latest. BTW, it's a good thing it's only a block and a half away.

So, the parts I took out were SunTour Symmetric Shifters (I'm curious about them and want to give them a spin on the Appel), a Raleigh FD for the Super Course, a bottom bracket, and a couple cable hangers.

While it was here, I did some housekeeping and re-bagged some odds and ends, pulled out the broken Simplex derailleurs and some rapidly degrading bar tape (dirt and grease from the parts was taking its toll), threw in some goodies and sent it along. Since the box was approaching its EOL, I put the stuff in a new box. With that said, there is some good stuff in there, but some that is of questionable worth. For instance, there are three left side cranks in the box and two different sized toe clips. I put them back in because they might find a mate, but if there was a co-op nearby, they would have been pulled out and donated to them instead of sending them on. That's the latest.

Skip, now to you...

How it arrived.

The BOC landed in Evanston for the third time today. I have some eBay stuff to get out this evening and I'm kind of wiped out from my commute home on the lake, so I probably won't get to it until tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to send it on its merry way Wednesday morning.

P.S. I will hopefully add better crap to the box than the last time it passed this way.

Fate smiled on me. I remembered I had an Illinois Masters swimming board of directors conference call. I love the mute button! I managed to rummage around in the box a bit, pull out the one item that looked useful to me, and cram a few more things in some of the cracks and crevices.

Still probably won't get around to mailing it until Wednesday. Maybe tomorrow, depending on the weather.

Hey,
Sorry...or you're welcome...that I had to pass on the many fine craps here. The crap has been in the back of my mind for the past couple months as life has turned very hectic and I was wondering/hoping it would take a while to come around to me. Anyway, I may give the crap another go when I have more free time, like maybe next winter (lol).

As far as the borked stuff goes, didn't we have a provision that it was okay to put in a broken part if someone could salvage a rare bolt or nut or some other still-usable part off of it? I want to say that's why still seeing bent and broken derailleurs in this thing.

Perhaps it would be better to up the standards a little and make it explicit that this is only for parts that can be used as-is? I mean, the cost of shipping this crap around did just go up.

I think it would be better to remove the good bolts/nuts off the borked stuff and put them into a Ziploc bag that would go into the box. Anyone looking for that special something could take a look through the bag for their holy grail bolt/nut. We all pretty much know what we're looking for, and the rule states we send the box along within 5 working days - plenty of time to check a few bolts/nuts for fit.

It seems the box has been regularly weighing in at around 25 to 28lbs, and there have been numerous recipients who've wanted to stuff lots of good things in there but were stuck because the really crappy/broken crap was taking up an inordinate amount of room.

The box is not meant to be a garbage can, despite the thread title. Let's try to step up the quality a little bit, whatdya say? Give with the same state of mind with which you take

Remember: Karma!

we need DD around to crack the whip!

1. If you can't abide by the rules, please don't play
2. Ship within 5 working days of receipt of box (if you're on the list, you should have some crap ready to be put into the box - right?)

As long as the communication is good, and everybody knows where the box is, I'm not as bothered if it slows down.

P.S. Somebody's stealing letters from you, frantik.
