Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Giant Defy 5 Or Raleigh Revenio ?

Hello,

I am planning to buy road bike (endurance bike). Following two is what i have shortlisted:

Giant Defy 5 (https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/defy-5-2016)-
Group Set Shimano Claris
Cost - 54 K Indian rupees (795 USD)

Raleigh Revenio ( Suncross Bikes - International Biking Experience in India. ) -
Group Set Shimano Sora
Cost - 41 K Indian rupees (604 USD)

I intend to use bike for 200 plus km (120 odd miles)

Would appreciate suggestion!

Regards,
Shreekant

Both are reputable companies. If you are going to be riding 200k on a regular basis, I would go for the Sora over Claris. I must say I am a little surprised Raleigh would put a 12-23 cassette on an entry level bike with a compact crank, unless your area is very flat (I've, never been to India), but 9 speed chains and cassettes are relatively inexpensive if you were to decide you need lower gearing.

My error. I am a little surprised that that Raleigh would put a cassette with a 25 tooth large cog on an entry level bike with a compact crank.

I'd take the Raleigh as well, with the 3500 groupset.

What would you expect them to do? An 11-32?

I would expect at least a 28; for most of the target audience, I think a bailout gear is a good idea, especially in hilly country. It seems a lot of midrange bikes are now coming with 32's or larger, especially in 11 speed (I know this is 9 speed). I certainly need a lower gear than 34-25.

Depends on the terrain. A 12-25 should be fine for people who ride in mostly flat terrain. Why go to something so varied as a 11-32 or 11-34 when you do not need it, especially for a 9-speed.
