I agree. I know the lugs are different from a master to an expert but my 89 expert (frame to frame comparison) feels heavier than my 88 master. However my 88 master is one size smaller, still..makes me wonder.
I'll repeat myself, I wish someone would perform a frame to frame weight comparison on the same year, master to expert.
Could be in my mind or the one size difference.
Either way my 89 expert looks and rides great, in fact riding it later today.

Dang, so close. It's gonna happen. In actuality we may not want to know. But they're supposed to be the same tubing.

Hey Tex , IMO a IM would make a nice track bike . BB would be a little close to the track , but not a deal killer .

So- given the documented differences in lugs - what do we think; same frame built by different fabricaters, with a different lugset, or what?
Same as Texaspandj, I think the two that I have ride differently enough to make me go "Hmmmm."
But it could also be down to size, components, condition.

A little off topic here . We all know Diamondback was Centurion , I just ran across this, Diamondback is mentioned but I have not checked if it is a DB . And if you don't mind my asking rccardr , where are the pedals ?

Panasonic National plant in Japan.

Lugs came in batches.
Tubes came in batches.

The welders/brazers said "we don't need no stinking batches...."

Or a mental thing. My guess is different manufacturing plants. However if same plant then they were designated different lugs. Because the master and expert do not share the same lugs. Does make one think do they share the same tubes? Based on how my two 88 masters weigh compared to the 89 expert I don't think they do. The unfortunate part is my 88s 52cm and my 89 is s 54cm so it could simply be the size difference.
That's why a bare frame comparison is in order same year, same size.
One last thing, my 87 54cm Miami Vice and my 86 54cm classic weigh about the same to me.
In the grand scheme of things maybe it doesn't really matter.
Somewhere someone has a an 88 expert and master frame ready to weigh. Please step forward.

After reading my post, it reminds me of when my son was about 14. We'd go pawn shop and guitar shop hoping trying out different guitars. Inevitably we'd run into fellow musicians and they would talk guitar geek stuff and we rarely knew what they were talking about, but my boy could wipe the floor with them on guitar. I used to always say son don't be one of those guys, Just play and don't obsess about equipment. But my son(s) are music mutants and today is one of the best blues guitarist in Texas, and in Texas that's saying alot.
So I guess I'm now one of those guys, more about equipment than talent on the bike. But you know I'm cool with that. Just don't call me a geek.... Ok go ahead and call me a geek.

I've been riding sparingly for the last three weeks and running even less.
It all started when a local duathlon I was keying on cancelled. So I've decided to use this month as my off season. Helping me to come to terms with the season being over was my hurt back and a broken finger. I've already gained 10 pounds.
I'll get back into the swing of things in Dec alternating a 4 mile run with a 20 mile ride every day of the week. In Jan I'll do the same but increase to a 8 mile run and the next day a 40 mile ride and just alternate building base miles.
I've been on other threads just having fun. I tease them about their carbon fiber bikes. But I really appreciate all bikes. In fact back in the day I wanted the original kestrel. Now I want the ironman carbon fiber. But I gotta tell you , after reading about those other CF failures I'm a little hesitant. However I'm sure ill get over it once I get my 54cm CF Ironman. If you see one let me know.

First thing I thought is that thing legal anywhere? Then I started looking at it closer and wondered is that a compartment on the down tube? Both questions were answered in the description.
I don't think I'm fast enough to look at it much less ride it and attain a speed where the aero benefits would kick in. Still....its cool.
Btw is that saddle backwards?

Yeah- I get that, guess I'm going down a rabbit hole, But I've just not had the chance to ride two different models of the same line and felt such a difference. Could very well be, as RobbieTunes pointed out, down to assembly differences, but that's a lot of variation for modern manufacturing.

Riverie - don't dis-pare, there are actually a bunch out there, late fall is not a great bike selling time (but a good time to buy). One tip- search for "Centurian" as well as "Centurion." I found two of my three listed with that incorrect spelling - and no one else did <G>.

Of all my Ironman, my MV is the only one with paint issues, yet still is so much fun. In fact next year it will be my triathlon racing bike.
Congratulations, can't go wrong with that iconic color scheme.

Thanks! Couldn't have done it without this thread. The levers are the original Shimano BL-1050 levers and the Ironman logo has few dings, which I can live with at the moment.

The brake pads are running out of rubber and I'm hoping to replace them soon. I've got these sitting in my part bin. Is there anyway I can put these on the Shimano BR-1050 brakes?

You would need the pad holders that actually hold those brake pads, but they'd work if you had those. I'd get some on line, cheaper by far than any shop. Not good for shops, but that's the way of the world these days.
