1 x 10 on a gravel road bike, retain the chain?
Guys,
The bamboo frame is built and I love it!
But there is significant work to be done before it's ready to ride and what I have to decide as I am about to epoxy the lugs for cable stops, is the front chain ring(s).
I would like to run 1 x 10 and not bond on the Braden on type mount for front deraliurs.
However the guy who rides CX at my local shop recons he had a hell of a time going 1x9 without running a front mech to just retain the chain.
What say you?
I would consider a BB based bracket and roller but would prefer nothing if chain tension alone will keep it on.
Maybe a single speed type ring with no ramps?

My preferred method for chain retention on a 1x? remains the classic chainring sandwich with a pair of blanks to either side. This is simple, light, reliable, doesn't depend on a frame mount and never fails. It also has the advantage over many other systems in that it also works in reverse, so no danger of dropping a chain if backpedaling through an arc to clear a rock or simply position the pedals in ready position.

This Problem Solvers or this Chain Keeper from Paul Component Engineering should work if your bamboo frame will allow it to be mounted correctly.

i think the hose clamp version may have to be the first to try because I have access to entry at work and also the seat tube O/D is 40+mm and in my infinite wisdom (not) I think I have built a node near where it needs to go.
where would I get those nifty carbon toothless chainrings from FB?

However, I've never bought one. I scrounge trashed chainrings of a larger size, bandsaw off all the teeth, then file round and smooth with a bevel angle toward the inside, so they're like the side of a pulley.

Shadow+ derallier selected but not yet ordered.
not finding narrow/wide chain rings for 5 stud 110pcd though.
It's getting expensive to simplify...
i hate to do it, but I may have to consider getting the hemp/resin out and putting on a braze on style front derallier mount.

Shimano's 10 speed 'Mountain' rear derailleurs use a different amount of cable pull to the 10 speed 'Road' rear derailleurs, basically your shifter won't work with it.
Shimano's 9 speed 'Mountain' rear derailleurs will work with your 10 speed 'Road' shifters and there is some 'Shadow' models.
On the following link, click on: 'MTB' > 'Rear Derailleur' > 'SUBMIT'

ah crap.
it was the + not the shadow I was looking for, ie the clutch and tension.
do you happen to know what the cable pull(mm)/shift is on the newer 10/11 shadow+?
does this sound like there is not a way to have a clutched der' and road shifter?

The easiest way to get a clutch derailleur and road shifter is probably SRAM since their 10 speed road and MTB stuff uses the same cable pull and they just released the Force CX1 group which is a dedicated 1x11 group with a road specific clutch type rear mech, wide/narrow chainring and matching left hand lever with no shifter parts.
If you want to stick with Shimano or Campy and keep a clean seat tube the best bet is the old school double chain guard setup Erik Voldengen: Single Chainring Cyclocross. If you want fancy guards FSA does carbon fiber, and BBG Home does lots of anodized colirs and used to do a guard machined to look like an Avid brake rotor.

Based on what I have read, I personally would switch cranks for the ability to use a narrow/wide chain ring.
Fortunately the bike I am setting up as 1x has a mountain crank.

I may have to give up on the shadow+ and with it will abandon the thick/thin ring, but the double ring guide seems dooable.

I'm in the midst of planning a 1x10 setup, and there are 110BCD chainrings available from wolf tooth components (Drop-Stop Chainrings). I think Race Face may make them as well.

I personally don't see the need for clutch RD other than mountain biking... even the narrow-wide chain rings may be slight over-kill for the riding I do (pavement and some gravel). Admittedly the cassette for 9 speed is a cm or 2 wider than the old 5 speed freewheels, but I rode a 1x5 "lightweight", sometimes as a mountain bike. This was back before mountain bikes came into being. No retention or special RD. I did end up breaking the frame, but never dropped the chain.
Of course being a bit over-cautious does have its advantages at times.

All that being said, I'm having really good luck with just the wide/narrow chainring and a 105 rear derailleur. And I'm trying really hard to throw the chain too. The Shadow derailleur I purchased may be getting sent back...

Unless you are going to be doing off-road riding or cyclocross, I think you are being a bit over-cautious. It does seem a bit overly cautious and I didn't order the shadow+ mech as there seems to be cable pull incompatibility with road shifters.
I had a triple that I took to single with a seat post mounted chain tooth and a CX type guard, but it was 130pcd and my SRAM double I was planning on using is 110pcd.
I have kicking around an old XT mega 9 mech, I also have a 10sp 11-34 XT cassette, that's the back end sorted.
Last night I ordered a single speed chainset, the 44T ring's teeth are likely too wide but it does come with an alloy guard. I have the non ramped shimano 44T ring and a Salsa guard from the triple to single so for the grand sum of £23 for the fixie crank set, I should be ready to go 1 x 10 with front sandwitch.

This is my 786 Shadow plus GS clutch derailleur with a 785 XT Hollow-TechII crank. I added the Paul chainkeeper and it is flawless.
