So Shimano wasn't making "high-quality" long-cage derailleurs and triple chainrings except for Dura Ace? Interesting!

And I thought you were a mechanic and knew better.

You know exactly what I meant. Instead of "high quality" we'll say "top level". Does that make it easier for you to understand? What does my being a mechanic have to do with this?

So XTR wasn't "top level?" Gotcha.

As a mechanic, I would have expected you to know that Shimano was absolutely making "high quality," "top level" long-cage derailleurs and triple cranksets other than 7700. But I've certainly been wrong before.

I had two of those new with the nut on the inside. I changed it as it was not easy to get to as it came in the box.
I have seen some 600 's set up with the nut on the inside.

Don't be that guy...again. You said Shimano had 'sold out' because they made D/A components that weren't 'racing' parts. I countered with 'why not...surely there are people that want top of the line ROAD components on their non-racing bike". What does XTR have to do with it?

FWIW: Shimano exploded views for all three 7400 RDs (7400, 7401, and 7402) all appear to show the nut oriented to the inside.

But since either orientation works equally well, IMO arguing about which way is correct falls into same category as arguing about "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?", and is of similar relevance in the real world.

My take? Orient it whichever way works best for you.
