Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I heard a rumor that Bill Gates was riding that very same road at that very same time on a Colnago. Leverage the moment.

RR - It happens all the time out here in Seattle - lots of popular bike routes covered with riders of mix school. Usually, though, the person who is jumping on to a group (myself included) will give a quick shot along the lines of "mind if i hop on back?" I'm comfortable with the etiquette on this side - I'll happily chat with a group as a solo - but it was odd to be on the other side as a guy who was lacking both courtesy and handling skills tried to jump on. Solution - slow and chat casually, i think. As in, "where are you riding from?" If he's seriously pushing, he'll push on, but if he's just looking for a group, he'll slow.

VG - totally right. I opened the door, and he jumped on. But it's totally awkward, right? Same thing happened on my ride - a few miles up, we were all at a stop light and the guy pushed for a yellow while i braked hard. But it takes a few miles to process.

Kimmo and Chas - There's the lesson - as UMD said, just talk to him early. Definitely had a little tunnel vision as we moved into the last, fast section of slight downhills.

1. You guys can always just drop said guy.
2. If he is strong enough to be in your group and you don't like the way he rides, just have him pull until he is tired. If he doesn't tire, it's a free ride for you guys. We've done this with triathletes where they absolutely don't mind taking super-long pulls and we don't either.
3. See step 1.

I would have given him a good firm ding-a-ling from my Hello Kitty handlebar bell.

Wait for a hill, make sure you're at the front setting a good tempo at the base of said hill, signal for him to pull through, let him take a few strokes, drop the hammer. Problem solved.

In all seriousness if I want to ride alone and someone unexpectedly joins me, I'll tell them I'm doing intervals and would prefer to ride alone. Every time I've said that, the other person was more than understanding and let me be. It's when you use the method described above that you'd better be sure you packed your lunch because almost every time I've tried that or something similar it has resulted in a chase.

Saratoga - that's pretty much exactly what we did to start, sans signaling him to take the front. We all just burned the switchbacks and he fell off the back, but unfortunately so did our Clydesdale 5th rider, so we had to wait. and then Boom! Reattached random rider.

Kim - Should have just jumped harder and earlier, or not jumped at all. Indescision!

TWL - that would have shaken fear into the core of his being. Thanks to Amazon, next time, I'll be ready:

I can't believe no one has said this:

The correct thing to do in this instance is to YELL at him.

I've always felt that it is impolite to latch onto a group you're not part of without at least asking. Having said that it does happen and when it does umd laid out the three realistic options back in the first handful of posts.
