Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

99% of the time it's not bricked. There's various things you can do, and an update file you can delete if it mounts as a USB drive. I've not had to do them, but I do read people mentioning them. I'm sure your search will be fruitful.

I just updated mine and had no problems. Were there any errors during the update? If so, were they when running the Updater or when you restarted the unit. This is the first time I've updated mine. It seems like the Web Updater downloads the update and copies it to the the Garmin. When you restart the unit, it verifies the update and then installs the update.

It "bricked" mine too. But I figured out a way to fix it.

1) turn unit off
2) Hold "enter" on the unit and plug unit into computer (bottom left button)
3) wait 5 seconds or so, then release 'enter'. This turns unit into "mass storage" mode, and should show up on your computer as a USB drive.
4) open garmin drive in computer, navigate to garmin/newfiles and delete all files there.
5) go up one directory and delete gupdate.gcd if it's there
6) re-run the web updater
7) eject drive from computer before unplugging it
8) power on garmin and wait at least 20 minutes for everything to load and process.

Should work then.

Just updated mine with no issues.

It took awhile to finish booting after the update, but I just let it go and it came right up. I don't have a use for the power meter improvements, but the fix to "finding multiple HRs" will be nice (I'm coming from v2.70) and I'm interested to see how they've "improved elevation gain calculation".

Thanks for the replies. Ended up rebooting it this morning and it went through the sequence fine. Last night, the computer wouldnt recognize the Garmin (great suggestion Mithrandir )and the 3 fingered reset wouldnt work. I read that if you leave data on there it could take a while to update. I let it sit pluged in over night and did the 3 finger reboot this AM and low and behold it started the updating sequence and took about 20 minutes.

I would suggest if anybody updates to transfer your data to a file on your computer and delete all your routes. from what I read and experienced the update had to go through your data and can lead to serious delays.

Not as seemless as I would expect but its working.

After the update, you also have two more screens -- 5 rather than 3 -- Keeping up with the new Timex which has 5 screens?

I'm not sure you need to hold any button when you connect to the USB port. I always just attach it to the port and it shows up as a USB device.

Item 7 is very important to do.

Mine updated no problem. I don't use courses and I moved all but my last two activities off of it before updating. Really liking the new power data features.

TSS, IF, and NP are the ones I'm jazzed about. Here's the full list from the release notes:

Added various power-related data fields, including left and right balance for supported power meters, Normalized Power (NP), Intensity Factor (IF), Training Stress Score (TSS), maximum lap power, last lap power, and Watts/kg power.

I updated earlier this week with no issues. I've noticed resetting is faster... that may be due to me taking all the data off though. Also you can use five data field pages instead of three. Most of the update seems to be for power meters which I don't have.

Thanks. Only thing I'm interested in is the "improvements to power meter calibration process". I just switched to the 500 from the 705 and hate how many buttons you have to push to calibrate the pm.

I sent it to you yesterday Bob, should get there any time.

Thats good to hear Im sure its just a small proportion that do have problems. Funny thing is that when you search forums for it locking up n the Garmin Screen or just plain not working, there doesnt seem to be one single fix. Im just glad I got it working!

Ditto. It takes a while. I just set it aside and ignored it during that part. I don't have a power meter and don't need five screens, but what the heck.

No probs with the update. But FIVE screens to cycle through now?!?!?

I rode today with only HR, HR Zone, and Cadence showing.

You can just choose to allow only one page to show. If I remember right, pages 4-5 were off by default.
