It's here in the states, built and rolling.



I took it for a 20 mile, slow motion shake down ride today.



It fits, it's comfortable, and all the parts are playing nice with each other.

My idea was a fancy pants rando rig. I just went for any parts I liked that seemed good looking, rugged and suited to the 'sportive' theme.



The Brooks saddle and the tires were the only components I had ever seen in person prior to this build (including the fact this is the only Bob Jackson I've ever seen in the flesh). A bit more to come...

I did not capture it, but I was very impressed with the Tange roller bearing headset. I doubt you could make it shimmy if you tried. It handles fine, but inspires confidence, and seems ideal for that second day of a long rando, when you are too tired for twitch.



I'm just happy about the fit and the handling, and if I've made any style errors I may be able to correct them in the future (bad fit, harder to correct).



I used some Sun XCD rather liberally; crank, rear hub and both derailleurs, and the OCD matching front skewer.



SP dyno hub and lights, Acorn bags, TA rings, Dura Ace bar ends, Nitto Noodle bars and Craft stem, Brooks Team Pro, Paul canti brakes.



I guess that pretty well covers the highlights. It was fun gathering parts and making so many choices, mostly swimming over my head all the way. I got help from Starmichael at Norther Cycles in Oregon, and Pete at Pete's bike shop here on the Space Coast, and some inspiration and insight from several C+V'ers.

Again, at this point, I am still figuring things out a bit, but my initial impression is that this rig is ready for the job. The engine may need a tune up...

I wish I had seen the way you routed the front brake cable before I built my BJ. I love how you brought the cable over the bar and back before dropping it into the brake hanger.

Where did you find a Brooks Professional with saddle bag tabs??? I thought the Pro saddle didn't have them. At least mine and every other Pro I've seen doesn't. Was it NOS??

Only the titanium version has loops, which seems like it's made for the racer boys who would not want the 'excess weight', so it makes no sense. They are pricey, but I got a good deal on clearance from a shop in England.

That's a beautiful bike and a great job of selecting parts and nice build all together!

I had issues with the Selle Italia mirror fitting on "vintage" brake levers. But since trying the mirrors on the Tektro RRL levers and it's almost as fine as the old Mirrycle mirrors!

That's a nice touring ride. Bob Jackson has been building super comfortable frame since 1935. Although mine is not a touring frame it's limited edition Diamond Jubilee #44 of 60 built by master frame builder Danny Fraser in 1995. It is slightly too tall for me and so rare that it has seen very few lifetime miles.

That is magnificent. I've had two Bob Jackson's, and have very much enjoyed them. Even the one that was too small took me over a year of hard riding to finally accept the fact that it wasn't the right size for me.

That is very sharp. I love those lugs; arrowhead, I think they call them?

25.5 ctt, perfect fit for me; they don't call me Chewy just 'cause I'm hairy. The stays, yeah, I could give some b.s. about lateral compliance or whatever, but they just look cool. I think the real reason was for Hetchins frames to be recognizable from a distance in a race, and difficult to counterfeit. Since Jackson made Hetchins in the past, I guess they are about the only other ones doing that.



A few people asked about the tail lights. They are Soma Silver Bullets, available direct from Soma, and from several other places on line.

p,s, Thanks, everyone, for the compliments on the look. I did not start out with the intention of keeping everything 'classic'. But, IMO, style peaked in the 60's, so it's not a surprise that what I liked looks like it came from around that time.

I don't need a lock; nobody wants to steal my pace! If you go far enough, though, you can impress people with the distance, and they forget how slow you are. "Yeah, baby, I'm a Super Randonneur."



^Not me, but the spirit is close. (I think that is Sheldon B. in the back-green shirt with white stripe; the tag said '04, so it could be).

It is Brooks leather tape in honey. It's a bit dark because I hit it with Proofide before wrapping.
