Miyata 618GT vs Miyata 600GT

Hi everyone -

Can someone offer me a comparison in quality between a Miyata 618GT vs 600GT? Is there one that is better than the other or are they roughly equal? I have seen forums comparing both to the 1000 but not against each other.

Thank you!

Hello! Welcome to the forums. Both of these bikes are Miyata's "second-best" touring bike, while specc'ed lesser than the Miyata 1000 the 6xx series Miyata are still excellent bikes and I'd be happy with them over many many other comparable touring bikes. As to which is better, 618 or 600, you really need to look at the year of manufacture as the geometry and components changed from year to year. You can easily decode the manufacture year by the serial number, the first letter is year, it doesn't start with "A", and I can't remember what it does start with, but I'm sure you can run that down. Sometimes the 6xx series had the same geometry as the 1000 with lessor components or tubing in the stays/fork sometimes it had slightly different geometry to be more "sport-touring" over "touring".

That said, the frame are made very well are a suited for everything, I think, save for hardcore short-circuit racing. If you have a choice between a 600 and 618, the choice is yes.

Pretty sure that the 618 is the 1989 model, and the 600 the 1990 model.

Geometry matched the 1000 series both years.

Catalogues here.

Poster should also be aware of the fine 610 model and also the 215ST if he only can live with just 1 water bottle mount. Both highly thought of and worth looking at if he is viewing ads.

Either is a good choice. I bought a 600 gt frame in 91 and hung my own choice of parts on it. Rode it in PBP that year and the Miyata did better than I did.
