New to brifters, need help with a triple using ST-6510

Background
I purchased some bike components second hand to build upon a used carbon fiber frame. I think I have all parts finally installed correctly and working in harmony with one another except the front derailleur/left brifter.
When I purchased the used 3-chain wheel crank/derailleur/brifter (ST-6510) as part of a set, I assumed, as the seller, that the left brifter was for a triple. I quickly realized that it was a double. I purchased a second left brifter that someone had that seemed to have one more click to it than the one I had but I learned that the extra click was for chain trimming.
I've also read on the internet that the ST-6510 could be used on either a triple or double setup. On E-bay they are listed either way.

Now the question:
How can I tell if a ST-6510 is a triple or double?
thanks for reading this
Jeff

Pretty sure all the 6510 shifters are 2 and 3 ring compatible. One of the few if not only Shimano shifters capable of this. Some sellers aren't aware of this which may cause the confusion in listings. I'm not 100% positive on this but someone will be along shortly to correct me if the info is wrong.

All 9-speed Ultegra front shifters (65xxx) shifters are double/triple compatible. There are 4 main positions plus a soft click trim position for the smallest chainring. This allows two positions for trimming the front derailleur with the chain on each of the three chainrings when the chain is on the extreme left or extreme right side of the cassette (rear sprockets).

Thanks all. I'll look over the instruction sheet and see what I'm doing wrong.
