Nashbar Signature 853 vs Access XCL
I want to build an inexpensive hardtail...which frame would everyone recommend? I like steel, but if the Access is lighter and rides better...anybody have input? Thanks.

Personally I would get the steel frame. You have to look at your options...The Nashbar 853 frame is only available in 15.5" and 21.5". The 15.5" Nashbar frame has a longer top tube than the 18" Access XCL. I guess it comes down to how tall are you and what type of riding you plan on doing.

No I dont think that the Access rides better...to clarify I meant that I like the idea of a steel frame, but if the aluminum Access is better I would purchase it.
As I am a student, my frame budget is 300 dollars. I have an old specialized rockhopper that is now too small for me. My thought was that I could get an solid frame to hang the old bike's parts on, then upgrade when I can.
I am 5' 10" too if that helps. If anyone has any other frame suggestions, i'm game. Thanks.

It depends slightly on your body proportions, but 15.5" is probably a bit on the small side for you...21.5" would be too big. 17"-18" would be about right...

The 853's made out of real nice steel; the Access is probably stiffer but I wouldn't be surprised if its ride rougher. Otherwise, if the 853 still comes in that awesome orange color, I know which way I'd swing...

It's more than you're looking to spend, but I think this is a reasonable frame/fork combo for what you're looking for. You might be able to find something like this a little cheaper if you dig around a little. If you don't need the fork, then you could probably sell it for $100 or so. It's definitely a nice frame, though.
