Clencher Tire clearance problems on Vintage Bike
I went to mount some Champion Gentlemen rimmed 27" x 1-1/4" wheels with new tires (Continental Gatorskin 27 x 1-1/4, 32-630, MFR# 0122300) on a 1980's Woodrup frame - and the top of the front tire rubs hard against the brake pivot boss that hangs just a tiny bit beneath the fork crown. The rear wheel I cannot get into position to slide into the dropouts, there is just not enough room.
I pulled a set of 27” Campy wheels (27 x 1-1/4, 32-630 Continental Ultra Gatorskins) off my Hetchins Italia and they fit perfect, front and back. These new tires (Continental Gatorskin 27 x 1-1/4, 32-630, MFR# 0122300) have a different profile. They are slightly taller, just enough to rub on the brake pivot boss in the front and will not fit into the space between the chain stay bridge and the dropouts on the rear. When I measure with calipers from the back of the rim to the top of the tire, the Continental Ultra Gatorskins that fit measure on average 40mm, while the new Continental Gatorskins that do not fit measure on average 44mm. Seems the new tires have a significantly higher profile. Has anyone else run into this problem? Are there Continental tires with a lower profile?

Those clearances sound way too tight for non-especially large tires. Was your Woodrup originally equipped with sewups? If so, the frame clearances would be sized for 700C wheels, not 27".

I agree with the 700c theory
