Peugeot Folding bike- early 70's?
I'm normally a vintage roadbike kind of guy, but recently added this Peugeot folding bike. I don't know anything about this vintage or model, but it is surprising how well-thought out it is. It rides out well, has a two speed rear wheel (by back pedaling a bit), the generator and lights work. It seems like it is pretty much all original.
I just wanted to share a photo or two, and see if you had any advice as to care, maintenance, and if tires like these are available (lots of dryrot with the present ones).

Check the tire sizing on them, IIRC Peugeot liked to use the oddball 22" size. Also everything on that bike is going to be french threading.
Let us know when you get the next one....these things are addictive. I started out with a 1968 Raleigh Compact RSW and now have 10 small wheeled bikes
and to add insult to injury I already had about 20 regular bikes.

thanks Aaron. You're right, these are pretty interesting. What really impressed me was the way the wiring works between the generator and the headlight. (So you can take the bike apart without messing with wires- quite ingenious solution). And the two speed feature is quite fascinating, too. Also, I wonder how they can make something so small so heavy- this thing weighs a ton! Jeff

Peugeot called it a " weekender" model . Looks like a bike made between 74' & 76' . You can tell by the decals .

im curious, were these actually made in france by peugeot? i was under the impression that puch made most of the u-frame folders in the early 70s under license for the big brands, peugeot, bianchi, et al.

I really like the bike, especially the front rack! The elastic on both racks are typical Pug, a pity it is so difficult to open up and fit a new elastic cord.
Is the rear hub a Torpedo "two speed kickback hub"?
Plenty of detatchable bikes in Europe with generator light front and rear in those days, I have four of them (plus two non detatchable- the only two that are stock).

That is a nice looking folder and the older folders are getting fixed up with newer parts.

Here in australia , the fold up pug's were all imported in parts from france and assembled by local bike shops up until 1976 . After 1976 , " cycles australia " , peugeot's australian sales arm , manufactured frames and added japanese " suntour " components to them . They even put them on the back seat of new pug cars in dealerships !!! They were everywhere in the 70's ...

The name for the model differs across the world , but check out the " pnsm40 " model , pug fold up. I've 2 of them . Gorgeous !! " schwalbe " make tyres and tubes - 22 x 1 3/8" or 550a size . So does michelin - " confort " tyres they call them . Hope that helps guys .

This looks exactly like my 1972 Peugeot DA 40 E. I am 5'0" so it is perfect for me. I ride it every day to work a half mile away. I park it in my office. It is heavy, but so sturdy! I bought mine for $200. People comment on it almost daily! I am so addicted to this bike, I just scored another one like it...an "NS" from the 70's in orange.
You can figure out the year by looking at the duomatic hub. In the center of the hub...to the right of "Torpedo Duomatic" there are some numbers and a letter. Mine is "36 P." I read somewhere that the letter corresponds to a year. P = 1972. Google "Torpedo Dumatic Hub" & you might find the age chart, once you find your letter on the hub.

My tires are 20 x 1.75 (47-406). Enjoy!!

Can you actually find Michelin confort tires in 20 x 1.75 (47-406) in whitewall??? I searched the internet for hours...but had no luck in the US.

This is, by any measure, a Zombie thread.
With that caution, I'll note Peugeot's product lines: Peugeot started with pepper mills, added bicycles, and eventually, motor vehicles.
Many will agree: Peugeot pepper mills (I own two) are the best in the world....
