Two Downtubes on the Mickelsen Trail in South Dakota. Schwalbe Big Apples did OK on the gravel. 2.125" on the 8FS, and 2" on the Nova. A little electricity helped us 70 year olds.

I get why Bike Friday chose the ETRO 451 wheels for the Pocket Rocket

To be fast, what make the difference is not 45mm overall wheel size difference between ETRTO451 and ETRTO406 (about 8% with 28mm wide tires) but the tires rolling resistance, 28x406 Pro-one on high quality wheels will be very fast too.

I'm not talking about speed, I'm talking about feel. When I ride the Pocket Rocket (451), it feels close enough to a 700c bicycle in how it rolls, handles, maintains its velocity, and manages imperfect pavement that my mind can be tricked into thinking that I'm on a 700c roadbike. When I ride the Pocket Crusoe (406), that illusion is gone. It's a fine bike - and one that will likely see more touring miles than the Pocket Rocket - but it falls short of feeling like a 700c roadbike. To be frank, I was surprised myself; I was expecting the Pocket Crusoe (406) to be virtually the same as the Pocket Rocket. But the difference is there and it's tangible, and now I understand why Bike Friday's designers went with 451 for the Pocket Rocket when they designed the bike.
