72 Paramount test build

The P13 frame from Milepost105 arrived on Thursday. I brought it to my mountain lair and decided to do a quick test build so I can get it on the road on Sunday and start to adapt as necessary. Almost all of it came straight from my Falcon and is age-appropriate.
I have slightly newer NR components in my bins to put back on the Falcon. Not sure I have an appropriate wheel set but I’ll sort that out.

Before y’all start zooming in, the Weinmann levers will be changed to Campy, and I’m not keeping the Falcon straps on…

The Falcon has miles of clearance and is designed for long reach center pulls. I’ve had a pair of Records in the bin for a while, and @Mad Honk kindly provided me a set of levers, shoes and Kool Stop blocks. The levers will go on eventually after I finish sanding and polishing them.

I’ve put a hanger extender on to support a 6-speed 14-28, with 48-42 up front. I’m thinking of putting modern pedals on it. I have these silver ones and a set of Superleggerias which would probably look best, but my feet are happier with clipless. I’m sure I’ll get better tires and I’ll probably order decals.

Just as I finished the build, rain moved in so I can’t even take it down the road right now! Thanks for looking, hope to have a ride report tomorrow.

Andy,
Looking good so far! About that wheel issue; I'm pretty sure that with some large monetary movements, the right parts can be procured. Smiles, MH

NIB high flange hubs Somewhere else in this tool box there are some NIB LF hubs.

Plenty of refurbished sets on hand, just pick your poison.

Looks nice . I have not had to use an extender for a 14-28 FW on my bikes with NR derailleurs but I am running 53/41 chainrings. Is that why you need the extender , for the smaller chain rings?

I would presume so that the RD clears the 28 cog.

Positron400, I get mine to clear the 28 tooth cog by moving the axel stops back. I have a few with that FW set up and Campy NR RD with no clearance issue.

Likewise, I have run 28 tooth FWs with NR RDs on Campagnolo dropouts on several bikes. It has always worked fine when I move the wheel as far back in the dropout slots as possible.

Measures 25 inches CTT so 63.5? I’m 1.9 m tall - 6’ 3” for us Imperialists. I rode 62s forever until I found the larger frames feel better.

Didn’t occur to me to slide the wheel back. I had the same drivetrain and wheels on my Falcon and didn’t need the extender. Different dropouts, but I’ll check it out.

Dave’s gold mine! Makes me think of Scrooge McDuck diving into his room full of money!

I’ve got plenty of hubs, at least two sets of Campy low flange, some nice first version Shimano 600 high flange, I think some Dura Ave high flange, and lord knows what else. I have to take some time to determine what kind of wheel set I want - I kind of want to build up tubulars for this but that may not be my best decision either.

Those brake bits arrived just in time, many thanks.

Looks wonderful and I feel you on the larger frames. So nice for getting the bars up. I like the 48-42 chainrings!

Wow, impressive, that was fast! Two things I forgot to mention: for shipping I ran the rear axle stop screws all way forward so they wouldn’t get bent (something I learned from Merziac), but you probably figured that out and adjusted accordingly; and the other is that this P13 has the brake cable stops on the top tube, which I think is unusual. It must have been specifically ordered, or just a fluke in the original build.
Glad to see you’re up and running!

I was noticing the top tube cable stops too, unusual for a P-13, they’re even on the opposite side from what a P15 would have. Typically there would be 3 clamp on cable guides on a P-13 but this is a useful upgrade. The chrome looks beautiful!

Many thanks, Jeff! I did note the screw settings, thanks for that. And I also found old posts where the braze-ons was discussed.

I find builds go fast, especially if everything is on hand. Most of the components went on straight off the Falcon. Today was chain, cabling and all the fiddling that takes twice as long. At some point everything will come off and get cleaned and polished, but for now I just want to ride!

I had a few cheap extenders on hand, I got some black, silver, and red at some point. I've used them with some Dremel modding to "convert" Huret dropouts. I was using the silver one and the bolt seemed to be stripped so I grabbed the bolt from a red one. Kinda pops, but if it shifts into the 28 without it when I pull the axle all the way back in the dropouts, it'll end up back in the hanger drawer.

I would look into purchasing graphics from Waterford. The time is Now or never.

if you go the slide the axle back to obtain 28t clearance, use shorter adjuster screws so that the extended fasteners won’t get bent.

I think Nervex Pro lugged Paramounts should have high flange hubs, Red bar tape with Chrome.

Thanks; I think it looks pretty good. Overall nice bike! A lot nicer than my '72 Paramount at least! Hope you enjoy it completely.

I too like the HF hubs on most of my classics , red accents would be my choice as well. Even the short throated Campagnolo drop outs like on my Colnago will accommodate a 28 tooth large cog. I usually run the springs on the outside of the dropouts to give a bit more room to move the screws back.

Looking at the red covers on the shift levers, made me think that red leather bar wrap and custom red leather brake lever hoods would look really nice.

Beautiful Paramount!

i managed to get a campy record to shift just fine on a 14-34t with a single chainring in front, but i don't have to worry about chain wrap. '59 frejus TDF with ag

rati dropouts.

Would be very cool if many of us paramount riders could have a meetup, showoff and classic ride.
I sure wish I would have used my 72 P13 at the TX churches ride, like pastorbobnlnh
Thought I may have needed the colnago master but the p13 would have served fine
