I don't know the full story, but weren't there issues with the True-Temper tubing and Serotta's design? or was it just the tubing itself? I understood there were hard feelings all around(?)

FWIW: 1988 is the year Andy Hampsten won the Giro d'Italia - on a "Huffy" with a frame that was actually neither by Huffy nor Serotta. He'd broken a team-issue, Serotta-built frame earlier that season and rode the Giro on a frame he'd had custom made by John Slawta of Land Shark.

Can't speak for 1987, but there certainly were in 1988. Short version, quoted from the article: ". . . . failure was eventually sourced back to an errant shipment by the builder's tubing supplier . . . ." Read the article and this one for more details. Can't comment on how well this was reported at the time.
