Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I took delivery of this yesterday:

Allez Sprint by Graham West 2014, on Flickr

Specialized Allez Sprint Comp. I've already done a couple of rides on it: a go round the block to test it out, and a ~20 miler to the top of the North Downs and back yesterday afternoon.

I have some Fulcrum Racing Quatto LGs on the other bike, and I'm thinking of swapping them over because I think they may go better. I think the Pirellis would be better than the stock tyres too, but I only have one available atm. I also have some aero handlebars and stem on the other bike, and I think I may swap them over too.

I saved £100 on the price too!

Focus Paralane Etap. Should be ready to ride sometime this week. Replacing my rain/winter/commuter bike with this. Should drop (at least) a couple of pounds off the old ride. Still waiting for the carbon tubeless wheels and seatpost on order. With 2 other bikes running etap, I really wasn't enjoying the 105 group on the old bike.

I swapper over the wheels I had on the other bike, which are semi-aero. Which I think makes it look the business.

I want to swap the handlebars/stem too. I have a set of Deda Superzeros, which are aero. But that is going to be way more of a faff.

Nice ride. My only issue is that I can't make sense of carbon seat stays on a titanium bike. Other than that best looking bike out of the last few pages. Of course that blue canyon bike comes in a close 2nd.

When I bought it in 04, I rode several brands and this Airborne rode the "smoothest". A LeMond Steel/carbon was a close second. I was active in the service at the time and because Airborne Cycles sponsored the AF Cycling team, a great discount was available. It made the purchase decision relatively simple. Haven't ridden a complete Ti frame, though I do drool over a Moots. If the stays ever fail, I could be convinced Cheers and thanks

Great frame! I wish mine fit me better. Still need to rebuild it. Been a few years since it was built-up. I have some longer horns and stem that should help.

Thanks bro. Best $250 I ever spent without a doubt. How someone could actually prefer to ride a H-E-A-V-Y, clunky, slow moving / braking mtb is beyond me??? Watching or actually riding a road bike in an alleycat race really shows how much fun a road bike is.

I was hoping you guys could sorta tell me what Road Bike I have! My father recently bought a house and it came with two bikes, I'm completely new to the sport (been a runner most my life) and wanted to know what these would be good for... do they need upgrades? How old are they? Thanks!

They're pretty ancient and beat. I'll give you $20 for the pair.

Seriously though, I can't imagine the life circumstances that lead to those two bikes being sold with a house, in that condition. Hard to tell the exact age, but they're both very high end bikes from the not too distant past.

One has pretty nice wheels, the other very nice wheels, both are high end frames from top manufacturers.

Neither would need any changes or upgrades for a new rider for many, many years, provided they fit you.

If you're new, spend the few bucks on a bike fitting, take both of them with you, get a mechanic to run over them both with you and give them a clean bill of health and fit them to you, or tell you they don't fit you and maybe they can appraise them. If not, someone here can appraise them if you take detailed photos of everything, and you can take that money and buy yourself something that fits (and you'll likely have a lot left over).

Where can I buy a house that 'comes with' bikes like this?

The only thing I can imagine is that the owner was riding the third bike at the time of their death and the bereaved spouse decided to sell the house with the remaining bikes.

My Ebay purchase I built mostly from parts I had laying around. Sold to me as a Rossin, not sure about the model or the year. I painted it black. Seems like a good quality frame although not very light.

Parts include:
Specialized Romin Evo, by far the best saddle I ever had
Tektro rl340 brake levers, I was surprised how good these levers are, I can get very good leverage on the hoods. The single pivot Shimano 600 brakes and/or the old pads are a slight disappointment. I will try and update the pads but I think modern pads do not fit these calipers without modifying.
Zipp Service Course bar tape, best bar tape I've ever had. Comfy, tacky and good looking.
Shimano 600 2x7 index, a regular cheap 12-28 cassette from Shimano.
Chainrings 53-42. Small chainring is a Biopace just because I wanted to try it out.
Dura-Ace 167.5 cranks cause I like them short
38cm Deda Piega compact bars cause I like them narrow
DT Swiss R23 spline wheelset from around 2014, I noticed these are no longer made for some reason. Reasonably light solid wheels with shiny silver hubs, what's not to like?
Splurged for a set of 25mm GP5000s (non-TL). They seem very fast and comfy at around 6.5 bars. No sign of damage after a couple hundred km's.
Stainless steel bottle cage from ebay, highly recommended
A proper Zefal frame pump

Ended up surprisingly heavy at about 9.5 kg. It works nicely though.
