It’s not the volume of work so much as the nature of it.
“You ran all those tests and still don’t know what’s wrong with my dog and she’s not better?” Yep.
“The elderly dog I’ve had for 2 weeks had 10 seizures overnight and I want her to be better at minimal cost because I am trying to adopt her out.” None of those things are going to happen.
“I’m coming in to talk to Dr Heathpack right now!” Don’t do that, Dr Heathpack is unavailable. <Does anyway>
“You lost my mean pit bulls blood sample and I want all my money back!!!” Done.
“My dog is worse, I think she needs neck surgery, I want to talk to Dr Heathpack and only Dr Heathpack!” Best thing if your dog is worse is to come in through the ER, but you can bring your dog to see Dr Heathpack at 2pm if you prefer <comes in at 2pm, thankfully no harm done.>
Other doctor at work: “Can you look at my own personal dog, I thinks she’s neuro”. She is.
My boss: “I have this weird case, it’s neuro not ortho, the guy drove kind of far to see me but he really needs to see you, totally weird gait. Can you see him now?” Nope.
Reception: “Owner has questions about radiation therapy. Please call.” What kind of questions, medical or logistical? “Didn’t ask.” Please ask.
And so on, all day long....

But also I have this pathological distaste for waiting on other people so I can do my work. Like to the point of reinventing wheels (software wise) because it's faster than waiting on other people.
Like if you were waiting on transcripts and it would only cost you your time to re-do the tests yourself... you would always take option B.

For @Ramona_W, I went out for a ride on a beautiful, sunny 52° day and felt crappy immediately, no explanation for it. About 11 miles in, I see my wife's car in a parking lot with her getting ready to pull away. Rode over, loaded my bike, and said, “Take me home.” She obliged.
The mind said let's ride and the body said no way.

It was odd. They could either medicate to get the heart under control or execute a "procedure". I said try the procedure. The docs had me blow as hard as I could into a syringe for 30 seconds, then they tipped me upside down for about two minutes. My wife said that when we started the procedure my HR was 220. After about a minute upside down it was falling towards normal. When they dropped my feet and sat me back I looked and ti was around 130 and falling. After about an hour it was steady in the low 80's.

Saddle showed up. Saddle rail hardware showed up. Found a pair of $145 Sturmfist 4 gloves on sale for $70. Picked up some chain lube. Had a @datlas special, sofritas burrito, for lunch (although he probably does black beans to avoid the meat content in the pinto beans).
