Another RAAM record. Allied Forces, 8 man team

I drove up to the race course where it passes my area and just missed these guys going by by a minute or two yesterday. Gave the chase vehicles a thumbs up as they went by. They were flying. 24.19 MPH avg for 5 days is crazy.

Going back tonight to time station # 52 to try to catch some of the racers going by.

leader board.

2989 miles in 7 days 22 hours...my gawd man that's an average speed of 15 1/2 miles per hour over that distance. I feel really small right now.

I have yet to ride a 400 or a 600 km brevet. To think of doing 600 km in under 24 hours and then doing it 8 days in a row... Wow!

Looking at the top 10 of the solo male category, it's interesting there are so many athletes from Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia. I wonder if the alpine environment (living at altitude, lots of climbing) helps a bit with training.

I followed RAAM this year and some incredible riders. Some of the records broken were really old. After watching the movie-documentary bicycle dreams I became very interested in the event. The movie covers the 2005 event and is very realistic, worth watching at least twice. These people have to be machines or robots!

That is an amazing run this year for solo men. I just cannot get my head around someone being able to sit on a bike for that long and not be permanently crippled. I have a hard enough time keeping the aches and pains away on my miniscule rides. I don't know how they do it.

the person I know that attempted RAAM got Shermer's neck and still hasn't fully recovered. Of course, that happens on 1200k's too.

Do you know how long he's had the problem? And do you by chance know what they do for it?

I was on the Katy Trail in Missouri last week and saw two RAAM riders go by where the Katy parallels Hwy 94.

physical therapy is all they can do. It has been 2-3 years now, I don't recall exactly when he rode. He told me he had a preexisting condition that promoted it. Shermer was the first publicised case, he was riding RAAM when it happened. So the problem hasn't exactly gotten a lot of general medical attention. I'm sure people were getting it on PBP decades ago, but it never got noticed. I saw a number of cases on PBP, including reverse Shermer's neck on recumbent riders.

2 to 3 years? Man, I thought it was just a short term problem. I did read about it on Wiki but there isn't a whole lot they say about it probably because like you say, there just isn't enough cased to get noticed. At least I now know the symptoms.

I think most people recover fairly quickly, possibly with a few trips to physical therapy/masseuse/chiropractor to help things along. It seems to happen mostly to older riders, and I would assume that is because their neck muscles aren't as strong. I am a little worried about it on 1200k's, but I have never had symptoms that would suggest I have anything to worry about.

The first year of RAAM is when Michael Shermer got 'Shermer's neck.'
Some folks have a chiro or masseur on their crew which could alleviate some issues.
One friend did PBP and developed the symptons. He propped up his head using his frame pump and a foam pad and finished.

I'm a subscriber to his excellent Skeptic magazine. I didn't know about his cycling history until I read about it in a cycling magazine a while back.

Yep. In fact in the latest issue of Skeptic Magazine, Michael Shermer reviews a couple of books on nutrition. In the review he mentions how long distance cyclists, like himself, obsess over nutrition.
