Hi from one newbie to another.

Just curious how bike users operate in Australia. Here in Canada we're supposed to follow the same rules as motor vehicles but....... There's no registration or enforcement of things like lights etc.

Similar or stricter in Australia?

There is no registration, but you are supposed to have a bell, and reflectors on wheels as far as I am aware, and wear a helmet. Its not overly enforced, except the helmet one, you will get picked up for that occasionally.

I really should look into it!

A bell, now there's a blast from the past. When I was a kid I know there was a rule about bikes having a signaling device like a bell. I had one and that was about the last time that I heard one.

We have a lot of riding areas that are popular with both walkers and mountain bikers. The most popular way of notifying walkers that they're fast being overtaken is to scream "on your left". Makes them guickly jump out of your way. I bet some of them would prefer to hear the distinctive sound of a bell instead.

Here too, about the only bike rule being mostly enforced in for helmets.
