Clincher tire recommendation for Outdoor velodrome
hey folks, Just getting into track racing and need some thought on clincher tires for our outdoor velodrome.
On most race days I do plan to ride my bike about 3 miles from my office to the track and then back.
The velodrome is asphalt(?) or similar. Currently I own Conti 4000's in both 25 and 23, can I use them or is there a more preffered tire?
Thanks
Robert

I know of quite a few people using the Conti 4000's and are happy with them. The Conti Supersonics are a great choice due to weight but are also more prone to punctures due to the thinner carcass. Vredestein makes some good tires that allow higher pressures and from what I've heard are fairly puncture resistant. I would stick with what you've got for now, especially since you're just getting started. Then you can see what everyone else is running and look to upgrade then. Since you're riding on the road to work you'll definitely want to avoid something too thin. Hopefully that makes a little sense...

That's what I figured but didn't know if there was a "downside" to them.

Supersonics are still pretty tough. I have them on my Ellipses that my girlfriend usually uses when she rides fixed on the road (and off road). I don't think she's ever had a flat on them, and has even done a good bit of riding fire roads with them.

I race on an ashpalt track mainly. My bike had Vittoria tyres on it originally. I still have the front on. They are nice and light, but don't agree well with the little loose rocks we find on our track. They take some big chunks out of soft tyres. I race and train on velocity aerohead rims and upon changing to a cheap heavier tyre, the change in weight was very noticeable on the windup. Anything will go on an asphalt track. A lighter tyre will spin up better, but longevity will be sacrificed as a result. I have Conti SuSos but I'm saving them for the indoor boards as I don't have tub rims.

Given it is an asphalt track, I'd look at a fast road clincher.

In my limited experience at the usotc velodrome and even in Frisco tx and Carson ca, all of my training and racing has been on heavy conti gatorskins. No flats. They are also on my road bike and also my city commuter. So yeah, I like em. I will probably find a lighter tire for racing this year and I'll probably be on tubulars anyway.

on clinchers I use Ultremos, but that's because I already have a pile of them.
For the kind of riding & racing you are doing, I'd use any racing tire that isn't super-thin.
Supersonics, et al, they'll all work well.
