Cycling on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Track

Calling all 50 Plusers planning to ride in the Indiana Tour de Cure Saturday, June 20th. Let’s plan to get together at the start of the ride for a group picture. If you have a 50 Plus jersey, wear it; if you don’t, look for some guys who are wearing the jersey. I’ll be there and I know few other 50 Plusers who will be there. I hope to see others bright and early Saturday morning!

Ride On!

A great day on the IMS track!

It rained almost every day leading up to the Indiana Tour de Cure on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But on ride day it was as good as it gets; overcast, cool and dry, perfect for cycling. I did the 75K out on the road outside the track and added enough laps on the track to being my total to 75 miles for the day. It was a blast riding on the IMS track. Here is a photo of my lovely and supportive wife and me just before the ride started. If any of you ever get the chance to do this ride, take my word for it, do it, you will not regret it!

Was There

Hi Spoke (Mark), I have not frequented bikeforums lately but I was there along with 10wheels and got to meet you.

It was my first visit to Indiana and of course the track. Did 102 miles, all on the track. If I get a chance to do it again, I'll plan to do the offsite ride also. Track surface and weather was great plus the wind was light so I was happy!

I was also able to ride with a local group on the Monday after the ride for around 50 miles. That was a lot of fun riding in Indiana farmland south of Indianapolis. Wish I could have stayed in the area longer but had to drive back home...with a side trip...a long way, over 1,800 miles to get back to South TX.

Good meeting you, hope the picture comes out OK.

Regards,
Richard

Hey Richard, it was great to meet both you and 10wheels. Congratulations on the century! I’m a Hoosier, born and raised in Indianapolis, but left in 1971 for Colorado and Texas. The Indiana TdC was my excuse to take a road trip that included Branson, MO, St. Louis, MO and Vincennes, IN on the way to Indy and a stop in Hot Springs, AR on the way back home. Staging a charity bike ride on a race track is a great idea. Now I need to get someone to schedule one on the Circuit of the Americas (F1 track in Austin). There was one back in 2013 but nothing since. Heading soon to Colorado to ride a few mountains, then in September I will be in Corpus Christi for the Conquer the Coast ride. Take care.

Ride On!

Hi Mark,

If I ride conquer the coast I'll let you know. It is the same weekend of the ride in Ft. Davis, TX so I also have a conflict on that weekend. Both rides are awesome, but I like Ft. Davis more because I get to ride in some real mountains....but Ft. Davis is a 10 hour drive from my house!

I also do a lot of rides in Houston, Kerrville and San Antonio areas. Love riding around Kerrville.

A ride on the track in Austin would be cool.

Regards,
Richard

Well, at long last, I finally edited the video from my ride at the Indiana Tour de Cure on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this summer. Enjoy. Please overlook the fingerprint on the lens near the end of the video. It happened at my last battery change. I have learned the hard way to keep my fingers off the lens.
