I FINALLY get to join the Raleigh competition club. I’ve casually looked for a Competition for about 15 years. I specifically wanted one my size, with Capella lugs, sloping fork crown, TA crank and a Jubilee rear derailleur. (Of course the Lavender one would have been acceptable too!) I picked this up over the weekend and took it for it’s first spin today. Perfect fit and a great ride! Last year I got a bit impatient and had one shipped from CA... then this one appeared locally and in better overall condition.

1985 Racing USA series, (still) pending rebuild, the picture was taken right after I unloaded it from the car
1973, the picture's are from the seller's ad, I only bought the frameset. I haven't decided what group to use on it yet and I have to have the derailleur hanger replaced. Someone cut off the Huret hanger, I got a suitable Campy style off a wrecked frame from a feloow BF member.

The Competition is a really nice , light , tight bike. In a lot of ways my GS is more like a racing bike , it is very light and it feels quite lively when in corners. I don’t know if the earlier ones are the same because I’ve never ridden one. The GS , to my eye, was a bit different than its predecessor with its seemingly tighter geometry, cut out Bocama lugs, and Campy equipment, plus 700c wheels instead of the traditional 27” on earlier competitions. The only thing I changed on mine was the rear derailleur when the Grand Sport failed on a ride. I swapped it out for a NR unit and , after repairing the original unit, decided to stick with the upgrade.

For some reason I haven’t shown this here yet or given it it’s own thread despite having it for a couple of years now. My 1984. I’ve kept it mostly as it came to me but added the Brooks Professional, gave it a new anodized black stem, and Black Sylvan pedals. I didn’t think I’d like the looks of this antique brown saddle on this bike but it’s really grown on me.
My 84 and my Brothers 85 (84 serial number) out on a ride together.
His 85.

Upgrades over the years, Campagnolo seatpost, headset, first gen Dura-Ace brakes, brazed on Huret front derailleur and water bottle cage, Brooks B17 with titanium rails, Brooks leather bar tape, Regina Oro 13-24 freewheel, drilled Regina Oro chain...cable ends all silver soldered, all period correct, mostly original paint with some restoration touch ups...

Up in the canyon yesterday, 95 in the shade!
Yes, I just finished building up a 1978 Raleigh Pro and took it on a 40 mile ride last weekend, so yesterday I took the ‘77 G.S. on a ride just for the comparison of the two. The Pro is more my size so not really a bike for bike , fair , analysis. Plus it was like 100 degrees out! I think I will keep them both until , or unless, I find that there is an overlap.

Supergeek9 Beautiful bike. Tell me about your brake lever hoods. Are they original?
Edit: nevermind I see Cane Creek. Perfect fit and I have those levers on my Grand Record.
