Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What to do with..

so, i've started to become a morning rider more and more (6-7am starts) and it's kind of chilly at the start so i usually put on my wind jacket and sometimes the leg warmers...by the time the sun really rolls out, i'm roasting!! what do you do with your jacket and leg warmers? I can fit the leg warmers in my back jersey pocket, but the jacket i don't know what to do with it

If it's just a thin windbreaker, you shouldn't have any trouble getting it into a jersey pocket. You just have to roll it up really tight. If it's puffier than that, I don't know... Can you ride a circuit route and stash it near your house?

Not exactly aero but, you can carry a toe strap and lash it to your bars or top tube.

There's nothing wrong with carrying a large saddlebag.

As mentioned above, a thin wind shell fits in your rear pocket, but my friends who like to do longer rides and love starting at 7am use a bento box. They even teased me, calling me a "pro" because I put my stuff in my pockets.

You could use the tennis ball can in the water bottle holder trick.

I usually suffer for 10 minutes, so when I warm up, I don't have to stop and undress, or carry extra stuff.

With that said, as a kid, I always tied my jacket around the top tube or handlebars when I needed to take it off.

my old windbreaker packs into its own pocket complete with a strap that goes around my waist

even so, I hate bringing it along so I usually just try to suck it up and deal with the cold until I warm up

Instead of wearing the wind breaker try a thin under shirt like under armour. As the temperature rises lower the zipper on your jersey.

how small are the pockets on your jersey that you can't stuff the windbreaker into one of the pockets? I can stuff my winter windbreaker into a jersey pocket without issue.

You can always tie the arms around your waste, while it might look dorky... it works.

That's not recomended. If it came loose it could get caught in your back wheel.

get rid of the jacket. instead use arm warmers and a thin vest (like a Pearl Izumi) that will all fit in jersey pockets.

If you want to really travel light, skip the vest, and put a section of newspaper under your jersey. Then just put the newspaper in a trash can when it warms up.

I'm now doing the same. 3 times a week getting out for 2 hour rides starting at 6am. It's cold, but I suffer through with a jersey, arm warmers, leg warmers, etc. Everything I would want to take off (full finger gloves, arm warmers, leg warmers) fit nicely in the pockets. I'll usually wear a running technical t-shirt under the jersey and haven't yet had to stop and strip that off.

I've been going out and it's been 5-7 degrees C in the morning and when I get back a few hours later it's up to 10ish, so still not roasting hot.

Except that the Fred-Patrol will mercilessly berate him. I'm glad to say I'm not a member of the Fred-Patrol however, and so I'd second the suggestions of a large saddle bag or using some pump straps or even those reflective pants-leg straps to lash it to your seat tube, top tube, stem, etc.

OR just get a nice light weight one that compacts down to a really small size. I got one of those $40 ones from Performance and it stashes in my jersey pocket pretty nicely.

The only problem with the tennis can trick (I sometimes use an old water bottle without the cap) is that if the ride is longer than 30 miles, I like to bring 2 bottles with me.

+1... a good quality base layer will help keep the chill off, and wick properly when it's warm.

This plus armwarmers = suprisingly warm and just right for 60F (at least for me).
