Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I went to HS with the state jr chess champion later sr champion. When I was a HS senior I played him a game with his back to the board. He beat me easily.

If you're thinking about your financial well being in your old age, there's a lot better occupations than law. Take a look at legal salaries. It's pretty bleak. For each successful courtroom attorney, there are twenty doing clerk type work.

When I worked in the federal government, there were tons of lawyers and most transitioned in after trying the private sector. It was for the income.

Wasn't there recently a boom in the quantity of lawyers that drove the market value of them down? I'm glad accounting has stayed a solidly marketable skill.

I thought about becoming a tax lawyer, but the thought of doing any more schooling makes my head hurt.

Being a mid-late 20s professional, I know plenty of people who recently went through Law school and are unemployed/working a non-law job. I debated a JD/MBA but the JD makes zero sense now. Too many lawyers out there, applications to Law schools are down massive (I want to say some major schools so 10-20% decline but no source on that). Just a REALLY tough field to break into, a lot of super smart people in the profession and very difficult to differentiate one's self.

If you think law is tough to break in to, try succeeding with an MBA. So many MBAs with so high expectations, it's extremely competitive. 70-80 hour work weeks are the norm for several years. You always have to worry about appearances and what you do on your non work time

Oh I can back you up on that, definitely agree. I am pursing a CFA designation while working at a HF so I can appreciate long hours and high expectations.

I disagree. Not saying you are wrong, I'm just disagreeing with you. One can be passionate about a hobby, but cycling can take up a lot of time and CAN be expensive. If you are a cyclist that constantly prioritizes riding over family time, then I can easily see why a significant other would get frustrated. Sure, sometimes all you want to do is get out on the bike, but in the real world of being an adult, we dont always get to do what we want. Being a grown up sucks most the time.

Its an easy decision, If you have a loved one that you share your life with (and want to continue sharing your life with) than riding should take a back seat. This of course does not mean you can NEVER ride, but ones priority should always be family first IMO. If a loved one is suggesting that you sell your bike and never ride again or choose me, than that is an unrealistic request. At which point, the answer shouldn't be "the bike or my wife", but how do we work this out so we can have a mutual understanding going forward. Marriage/relationships take compromise from both parties. If that cant be established, I would imagine there are more issues that need to be uncovered than just riding.

I keep my wife. She's buy me a new bike. If nothing else just because she wouldn't have to ride alone.
Life is good.

Bike. I dont think i value family enough. She'd be better off without me anyhow. I wouldn't let her die though, just live her own life! If it's a matter of bike or kill her, well of course ill give up the bike!

Terrible Jerry Springer kind of crap to spring on a dude, I would have grabbed the bike and walked off the stage without saying an effin word, I would have been livid beyond reason, probably take a week or two to calm down. I would love to see the video of this. Friggin wienie, grow a pair dude, toss the wench and get on with your life.

I'd never be in a relationship, let alone marriage, with anyone that would give me any ultimatum like that. And I do put my $$ where my mouth is.... It's why I've been a single-dad for almost 10 years now.
