Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Vintage Basso Loto Commuter

Hey everyone I just wanted to share my recent build. This was my first road bike and it was neglected when I found another Basso on craigslist. I stopped using the Basso loto for about a year and I have missed riding the bike ever since I stopped riding it. I gave the original groupset to my roommate who needed a bike to commute to work so the frame sat bare in my closet. This bike has been with me prior to my move to Portland, OR and I have put a good amount of miles on her and she has completed the Reach the Beach century.

I found this bike on craigslist for $330 and it had a frozen seat post. I was lucky enough to remove the frozen seat post with no damage. I am happy to have her up and running again, but this time with all Shimano 105 (5600) except for the front 5700 derailleur. Having updated all of the components made a huge difference and I no longer enjoy riding other Basso Devil. My inspiration for this build came from other Randonneur bikes that I have seen online and in Portland. Since this bike is my main source of transportation, I added panniers to relieve my back from having to carry around all of my engineering books.

I hope you all enjoy my build as much as I do.

Cool bike, is the rack Crank Brothers or is that just a plate you put on there?

That kind of makes me sick, but it's better than seeing that Basso in a dumpster, so.....

I used to lust after those frames back in '90.

Nice recovery! I hate to see a good bike sit without use. Have fun.

Here's my early Basso rebuild.

@RacerOne The front rack is from pdw, I just put a sticker on the plate..
@arcticbiker that is a beautiful setup. Is the frame a Basso Gap?

Yeah, I just threw up a little in my mouth. My Basso Paris Roubaix IS my road bike (D-Ace 7400). I get sympathetic looks when I say that to folks on rides, at least at think I do, they are a bit too far behind on hills to be sure. But I agree its better than it sitting in a dark closet.

@Shifty & @wheelreason is it because of the rack and basket? Haha

great built, you might want to touch up on the bare metal parts on the top tube.

They are really great frames, that frame is worthy of a professional repaint later on.

Well Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it and I realize that I posted the wrong bike in the wrong forum. To make up for it her is my 2007 Basso Devil that I found in Portland. My favorite parts on this bike are the Cinelli Integralter and the Mavic Cosmos 24h rims laced to Zipp 182 24h rear hub and Zipp 82 24h front hub. The Chris King BB doesn't do much but look pretty when I look down.

This is now my weekend rider and has been through some tough hill climbs in Oregon.
