Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How to clean (road-)cleats

Hi,

I ride on Shimano road pedal system.
The other day I was riding and had a flat so had to walk on the side of the road to find a place to repair and my cleat is now covered with dirt/mud/...
I tapped it on the road to wipe the excess, so clipping-in and out was doable...

But how to clean it for good? knowing that the soles are carbon...

Thanks!

Just get some water, and maybe some soap.
Let the dirt soak up some water to get it to soften up a bit and than just use an old toothbrush or something.
That should do the trick but any other way would do so too.
You can also use a pressure washer, most of the pro cyclocrossers do it this way.

As long as you can clip in and out, don't bother. The rest falls out when its dry.

Whatever you do, DO NOT simply spray off the dirt with a garden hose like you would any other shoe. It will be too much for the carbon to handle..

A garden hose is okay as long as you don't use a nozzle. Carbon can take water without the pressure.

Would a water nozzle cause my carbon soles to asplode?

I just scrub it with a nylon brush (dry) and wipe the rest off with a clean shop rag.

1. Remove water bottle from cage.

2. Aim water bottle at cleat area.

3. Squeeze.

I wouldn't try to do it yourself. Take it in to your LBS.
