Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Bike or your Wife, one must Die !! COULD YOU CHOOSE?

If this question was asked of you, could you answer it, HONESTLY? I can, Could you? It doesn't have to be your wife, It could be your husband, girlfriend, boyfriend, or significant other.

By die, I mean watch your bike crushed before your eyes, or A breakup. Has your signifacant other ever made you choose?

ME or that Damn bike!

My wife would have taken a Hammer to my bike, if she had the opportunity to, so many times before, if she could have gotten away with it. An hour here, or two hours there, and four maybe on the weekends. Does that seem too much?

I try to be there for her as much as possible, But sometimes you just need to ride. WHY IS THAT SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND??

There was a TV show out a couple of years ago. The guy from the Antiques Roadshow hosted it. I think his name is Mark Whallberg. I know its probably spelled wrong, but this guy's girlfriend came on the show, complaining that her boyfriend spent more time on his bike than with her. So they basicly made him choose between the bike or her! He had so much pressure on him (they kept the cameras and the pressure on him).

They brought out his bike, as the question was raised, GRILLED HIM. And made him answer. He of corse chose her.

They then brought out a Sawzall, and Mark Whalberg procceeded to cut his bike in half! The guy looked crushed! He cut right through the top tube, then you saw the brake cable pop, then the downtube. The guy started to sway. then the pop of the shifter cables, and the bike crumpled! His girlfriend ran up to him and hugged him. The camera went right to the guys face. HE LOOKED SHELLSHOCKED! She was exstatic, he stopped talking.

I gaurentee that relationship ended within the week.

Hopefully the show replaced his bike. Could you, or would you, ever make someone make a choice like this?

It depends on the girl/bike.

Obviously you are passionate about cycling but in the real world I'd keep the wife, watch the bike get crushed, then have a reason to get a New Bike!!!!!

If you have to think twice it's either one helluva bike or a nightmare of a wife.

What a stupid question.

I'd toss them all in the crusher.

On the plus side I'd have room for a motorcycle.

I'm keeping the bike...

Then again, I'm not married nor do I have a girlfriend at this point in time, so my bike kinda wins by default...

I will be getting divorced later this year...so the choice is easy.

But seriously, a person who forces one to chose between one's passion or her (or him) is not worth making a life with.

Can anyone find or know the name of this show? And yes this is my 67th post, and yes, this is a question that I would like to see if anyone as a cyclist could answer. Can you make a decision? Black or white? One that is good for you, or your significant other? Choices Choices.

I would use my bike as a mighty scepter to bludgeon anyone that had any intent of harming my wife, on my way towards dying to save her if necessary. And doubly so for my children.

I choose wife.

Now....... if my wife was making it a bike-or-me proposition, which would only happen if I myself had failed on many levels, started with, oh, who I married..... then I'd continue to ride, call her bluff, and work on ways to improve the relationship that didnt involve bull**** demands by one party on the other.

Caveat...the sex would always have to be awesome, she'd have to be always ready, willing and able. Tandem and group rides would have to be an option. Proper aesthetics would need to be maintained.

Frequency would need to be increased to correspond with the number of watts generated via cycling.

See! Simple!

(My wife is more than happy when I get out of the house and just burn through male energy...she understands that it makes for a very calm cave...Neither of us have time for senseless insecurity and neediness...that's adolescent behavior...)

Is this already in motion or are you planning ahead? It is just a bike but I do have two.

You miserable son of a gun! I got tears in my eyes reading the description of the destruction of that bike in your original post!

I'm not sure how most people would answer the question but maybe they should base their answer on which association has been more durable. Then again perhaps not since nowadays it's not unusual for someone to buy a bike and hold onto it for twenty years or more but there aren't a lot of romantic relationships lasting that long.

Ding!

My wife makes more than my bike though... I can always buy another bike. With her money.

Anyone who would make me choose between them and a passion I know I will have for life can escort themselves right to the curb. Life's too short to spend it with selfish people.

Agreed. My wife bugs me about riding too much sometimes but it's never gone to that extreme.

I've never understood how someone gets jealous of an inanimate object. If my wife loved something as much as I love riding I would happily let her do it as much as she wanted.

This. If I have to choose, I go with the one not twisting my arm. Which in the TV scenario means riding off on the bike.

Now, have to sell the bike to buy medicine for my GF, different story, there is a fire and I have to choose my bike or gf, different story. But in this scenario? To the curb!

My wifa has an eternal soul, and I'm accountable for how I treat her. I vowed to love her and forsake all others...

My bike is simply an object. My choosing any object over the welfare of my wife...that would be...um...unthinkable.

If your spouse is upset with you, put down everything and begin to get to the root causes. It's likely that you're selfish in many areas, not simply with regard to bicycling.

My two cents...

The "process" has been developing for the last couple of years. The legal end will be this year.

Yes, she was that selfish...she always wanted to be able to do her thing but would not extend the same to me.

The happiest two years of my life have been the last two years...when I finally stopped giving a damn about her nagging and began doing what I wanted to do.
