You should probably go ask this in the Hybrid forum.

This.
But since you're here; The answer to your first question and the thread title- if you're happy with the bike you have, a high-dollar/more expensive bike has nothing going for it. What's quantifiably better on a more expensive bike, assuming the sky's the limit? Absolutely everything.

There's always a more expensive bike than the one(s) you own.

Depends on what your bike is now.
I remember when I went from my Panasonic bike to the Univega. The Panasonic and me went everywhere and did some long trips. I finally broke down and purchased a Univega for $1100 and everyone thought I had lost my mind.
But I found the Columbus steel frame was lighter than the Panasonic. The Campagnolo Centaur (back then called Daytona) shifted like a dream. Clicked into gear instead of the slop found when the Panasonic shifted. Also, having a 20 speed is just makes it so much easier to find the perfect cadence. I could go on, but I am sure you get the point.
Carbon frames are even lighter. Step down and the bike feels like it wants to fly out from under you. A lot of people say "it's not the bike, it's the engine." That may be true. But since purchasing a better bike I ride more and my average speed (for trips over 10 miles) has gone up 6 mph. So a great bike DOES make a difference.
Do you NEED a high dollar bike? Depends. Do you race and want to be competitive? But if you just jump on your bike like to ride and see the sights, smell the flowers and just enjoy being outdoors, maybe not.
