Can I use road shoes and cleats with Shimano PD-T780 pedals?

I want to use my road bike not only for longer rides clipped in with road shoes and cleats, but also for riding around town with normal shoes/sneakers.

After some research, it seems that Shimano PD-T780 pedals seem to be a pretty good SPD / Flat combo pedal.

But it is principally a MTB pedal and I want to make sure that I can also use road shoes and cleats with the Shimano PD-T780 pedals.

If anyone things that there is a better solution than the Shimano PD-T780 pedals, please let me know.

FWH123 Yes. You can use those pedals with your normal shoes or cleats. You can also search for "SPD/flat" or "campus pedals" or "combination pedals". They're pretty common.

Thanks jase33. Can I use road biking shoes with these pedals or do I have to wear MTB shoes?

FWH123 As long as you use SPD cleats they will work.

If by "road shoes and cleats" you mean a typical road shoe, no.

The PD-T780 is an mtb/SPD pedal; it takes a two-bolt Shimano SPD cleat: SH51 or 56 (or clones thereof). You can't mount that cleat on a typical road shoe, which is usually drilled to take a three-bolt 'Look' pattern cleat.

There are exceptions to the latter; Dromarti, for example, makes an SPD recessed-cleat version of its leather road cycling shoe (https://dromarti.com/cycling-shoes/sportivo-classic).

Easiest solution: if you want that pedal, just buy a good pair of mtb cycling shoes/any good cycling shoe that takes an SPD pedal.

Some road shoes are drilled for 2 bolt also. Depends on shoe. Also they make 3 bolt to 2 bolt spd cleats. But both of these are less than ideal. While they'd work, you'd be walking around on that cleat. They also make "pontoons" to go around cleats. Have no experience with those. Road cleats will not work with these pedals.
