Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's mostly likely a '92. I don't know if you got ripped off but $350 is a lot for a soon-to-be 20 year old bike.

My first road bike, just picked up and road once yesterday. Not the color preferred but LBS enticed me to change mind.

I have a Giant OCR 3 that I bought a couple weeks ago. I just recently got into biking again (haven't owned a bike since middle school) and I started out with a purchase of a vintage road bike, but found out about a week later my friend's mom had the OCR for sale. She just wanted to get it out of her garage. She bought it new a couple years ago for much more than I paid for it. For $50 I got the bike, gloves, padded shorts, jersey, back rack and a nice little tool kit with all the essentials that fit in the saddle bag. Not bad if I say so myself, and I LOVE the bike. I know it is a men's bike, but I don't care, it fits perfectly and runs so smoothly.

Here she is!

Didn't that dealer explain to you that Red is Fast? And don't scratch it up with that anchor chain!

I preferred black and white, and this is faster than my cannondale bad boy(actually a F4) with 700c's, just have to get used to road bike position. My palms are sore, may have to lengthen the stem a tad, flip it, or play with the spacers. Seat and pedal position are right on. That boat anchor serves two purposes, tire and bike, mostly tire because I don't like to leave bike unattended. The tire was ripped off once before.

Why do you hate your chain and derailleur? You should never ride in the big/big sprocket, and never park the derailleur in such the position. It'll ruin chains and components.

You want to keep your chain running in a straight line for the bike to ride smoothly. You do that by using certain combinations of gears and avoiding others. For example, when you are in the small chainring, you will want to use the biggest cogs. When you are in the big chainring, you should stick with the smallest cogs. This will keep your chain in a fairly straight line.

If you use extreme gear combinations, such as the small ring and the smallest cog or the big ring and the biggest cog, that’s called cross chaining. This puts the chain at too much of an angle, which makes the chain wear out extra fast. (You’ll usually hear some sort of grinding noise coming from the chain if you do this.) It also makes it more likely that the chain will fall off the bike.

Hogwash. Take a closer look anyway, it's not big/big. The combo he's in now is perfectly fine.

He appears to be on his 2 largest cog which is a pretty reasonable place to stop riding. Stopping on your 11 tooth would make it a tad hard to get started again.

I'd never park there, with the derailleur stretched like that. But you can do whatever you like. I typically always park in the small front and mid-to large rear. But thats just me.

Let me help all you out, this photo is actually pre-first ride, directly from bike shop. And yes, I do know about cross chaining, in the photo it is actually big and 3rd from big on rear. Last person on bike was a 2 time California hill climb champion, guess he didn't know.

2011 Motobecane Vent Noir

Everything stock except saddle, pedals and my super-duper aero bottle cage

I'll try to keep everything stock so I can appreciate my first road bike. I'm looking to upgrade next year (or probably keep this Moto as well if there's space). And yes, the upgrade will be in Noir again

Bikes: Late 90s KLEIN Mantra Comp. Late 60s, early 70s Italian made MASI GC. 80s Nishiki Linear. Late 80s ALAN R30 Carbonio. Last of the California made Kestrel 500 EMSs

My small collection, not all road bikes though :)

My main ride:

Kestrel 500 EMS w/2011 Campy Super Record

My alternate ride:

ALAN R30 Alu LS w/2011 Campy Chorus

Exchanged this for a Mavic Helium wheelset:

My early 70s Masi Gran Criterium with the original Campagnolo Record/Nuovo Record components.

A friend gave this to me in pretty sad shape with a mix of low end Dia Compe and Shimano parts, replaced with Dura Ace 7 spd, a friend that paints race cars emptied his partial paint cans on it

My 80s Nishiki Linear

My first mountain bike, taking all the components off and putting them onto a new carbon hard-tail.

My late 90s Klein Mantra Comp

Trying to recapture my childhood, had a Chopper mark 2 back then. This one has under a mile on it.

My Raleigh USA Chopper Mark III

Gone but not forgotten:

Late 70s Legnano, forgot model but it was Columbus steel, no eyelets, full Shimano 600, Mavic rims, Cinelli Campione Del Mondo bar/ Cinelli stem.

1985 Cannondale R300 - the purple people eater.

Last year of the Schwinn Paramount, lugged steel, metallic blue.
